reasonably priced computers?

Featured Replies

We are looking to replace our computer but keep the monitor and keypad. It's quite old now in this crazy techno world and I suppose it's quite slow.

Any suggestions to who supplies reasonably priced but reliable good rep computers? I suppose I'm looking at spending no more than

Check out Barebone Systems : Computer Supplies from Novatech. Just the other side of the water and I've only ever had one issue with them (but that was nigh on 7 years ago and they did sort it when I turned up in person ;)).

Their sales line is also pretty knowledgeable so if you tell them what you want to do on the computer they can pick out one for you (or I'm sure the Brisky massiv can find one for yer) :D

Just had a look at that linky, from what they say is in included it looks like we would have to dvd/cd drives separately?

Pix :) (technophobe  )

Tsk, you never mentioned DVD/CD drives :P I'm sure if you chat to the nice people they'll fit it on the production line for ..... or if you or Mr P are feeling brave, it takes about 2 mins to fit one ;)

In fact, if you already have one in your current PC, you may be able to move it across....

Was that supposed to be twoDVD/CD drives, Pixi ?

You don't need 2 most times. A DVD writer will also burn / write CDs

An excellent DVD witer is the Pioneer 112 (have one, son has one, friend has one)

Right, now I'm going to share with you what we have at the moment and you have to promise not to laugh (Hoff!)

30GB

One thing is to make sure you get a large enough capacity hard drive - the size of everything - programs, operating systems, amount of videos to download etc has increased.

Is the computer used for basic tasks or for anything specific as well ?

Minimum you should really be looking at now is

250 GB hard drive

1GB ram

2 + GHz

If you're thinking of running Vista then you would need a faster processor still, probably 2GB memory - and a fast video card with plenty of memory

I'm not sure about this Vista business, I might stick with XP for the moment. The pc is used as a normal recreational thing, nought special but a bit of downloading and music making. As long as it's as fast as possible I don't need it to be flash.

Am sticking with XP too (so too many friends)

Vista seems to offer little but extra complexity and extra hardware demands.

vista is way more s****y to look at and has a lot of little things that take a while to notice and it runs fine on my old laptop which is a 1.6Ghz pentium M with 2Gb ram and an ati 9700 mobilty radeon. :)

i can recommend dell but i'm not sure they do bare bones system, lets take a look.

just a quick look and just over

OLD SKOOL!!! :headbang:

(although I do have more RAM than you, and an external HDD for all my piccies and music... ;) )

Why won't you let your best-beloved build his own? I've made a few in my time, and I've never even been taught how. The inside of a PC isn't as complicated as people think (like car engines, I suppose!) Last one I built was pretty good for the time - can't remember exact details - but cost less than

if it cost less than

If you read my previous post you wouldn't have needed to ask ;)

just a quick look and just over

If you spend

Let him build (or get someone else to do it for you) i have built a few in my time (work in IT but not hardware related) so i am no hardware expert, the sort of machine that you are talkin about would take 3-4hrs start to finish tops.

As the boys said, whats the worst that could happen. Dont buy off the shelf if you have another options, u wil only pay more for something you didnt really want.

Talk to the nice people at Novatech....just across the water from you....they are really helpful and I am sure if you mention the Dell one they will try and pricematch it.

I have bought loads of stuff from novatech with no problems....reccommended 100%

I'm not going to repeat myself again about why I don't want him to build it ;)

As for replacing the monitor, it's a new flat screen one anyway hence the reason why I said in the original post I wont be replacing it or the keypad.
