Changing VW MFD to green illumination

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried this? I've been looking for an MFD for months and there hasn't been a Skoda version on ebay for ages. I'm starting to think about getting a VW version which are much easier to get but would only do so if I could change the illumination to green. I'm competent with a soldering iron but just not sure how hard they are to get apart without breaking?

There's a website of someone who turned his Passat to a Superb (or the other way around) which describes what to do. It requires surface mount soldering skills though :(

Try emailing some of the sellers listed on my install pages and ask them to get you one.

How do they get them so cheap? Direct from the skoda factory? They jump into an employees bag? Chech prices?

Or is it simply the gready dealers raking in the money on extras?

Breakers cars I suspect...

I think they are probably refurbs, wouldn't be surprised if Blaupunkt don't have some sort of facility out there.

Thanks for the input. I've emailed a few people on ebay without success. After much thought I have decided to get a vw mfd (version G) and have a crack at changing the LED's. The surface mount soldering is ok but I'm a little worried about taking the front off the MFD to access the LED's. If I am unsuccessful then I will change the LED's in the switches above and the climatronic panel.

If you do succeed in replacing the led's, can I be your 2nd customer? :D

Could be a nice little earner, I would love a green lit DVD VW unit :D

I think Phil is talking MFD's and not MFD2

Yes MFD (to suite Octy1/superb/furby). If I am successful I would be happy to do others :)

Well I have found a victim...erm I mean MFD. It's only 30 minutes from me so I'm going to pick it up over the weekend :D

Keep us posted

If you take lots of pictures along the way (not driving there, but from the actual modding), you can make a nice tutorial for others :)

Yes but it's Ford! Eugh!

I did actually consider a Ford unit but there is a lot less info available regarding different versions etc.

I've been a bit busy with work recently but have now sourced all the parts I need so MFD surgery will hopefully be taking place in the next couple of days. :D

Gosh, these LED's are small!! I will not be beaten ;)

Surface mount right? Told you it wasn't going to be easy :D

Yep surface mount, I have done one side but I'm going to bodge some form of magnifying glass stand before I do the other side - I'm getting eye strain

Couldn't find suitable LED's anywhere! I found some which would fit but I would have needed to change resistors etc which I was not a fan of. In the end I decided to butcher my Symphony (which was on the way out anyway) to steal it's LED's......Sadly the MFD uses 5 LED's more than the symphony so I had to buy a second symphony head unit to butcher! I got one off ebay for

Nice one!

Any pictures?
