Changing VW MFD to green illumination

What a traumatic day! After testing the side I have done, I found two LED's were not working. On inspection I found one of the LED's to be damaged so I replaced it and all seemed well. I waited until 1pm and there was no sign of the damaged symphony unit I have bought off ebay (will have to chase that up) so I decided to rebuild the MFD so I had something to listen to in the car. It went together very easily (they actually come apart very quickly/painlessly)... I plugged the unit in and ..... nothing... not a problem I thought, something I have forgotten to plug back in... I took the front off the unit again and all seemed ok... but still nothing.

each board (right and left) is linked to the rest of the unit via a ribbon cable - both sides are identical so I swapped them over to see if the one on the left had broken (stopping the power switch from working)....still nothing. I then inspected all the tracks on the board I had been working on to make sure I hadn't done any damage but couldn't see anything obvious.

I was starting to think that despite being earthed whilst working on the board I had managed to damage something with static' or heat...

After much swearing I discovered that the socket on the main unit, into which the left hand ribbon cable plugs, had a bent pin! After straightening it out (with a tiny watch makers screw driver and magnifying glass) all is now well! and the unit is working perfectly (all be it half red and half green!

I'll post some photos of the green illumination later (when it's dark) as it's almost impossible to see in the daylight anyway.

Not many pictures at the moment but I'll take some more tomorrow if the bits arrive to do the other side.

10 out of 10 for dedication mate.

:D

I know this is going to be a stupid question but what's the difference between MFD and MFD2? Do both fit in a Furbie and will it still control the standard CD changer?

Cheers

MFD fits Octy 1/Superb/Furby 1

MFD 2 fits Octy 2 and maybe others....

I think.

They both control CD changers.

Phil, love the green

What a traumatic day!

May I refer the honourable gentleman to post 12 :D

It looks great though.....

All done! The second side took about 30 mins which included removing the unit/dismantling, removing the LED's from the MFD and the donor radio and then soldering the green LED's onto the MFD board and refitting. It really is not difficult at all once you know what you're doing and I would happily do it again. I have now found a website which sells the correct LED's so the whole job could have been done for around

Where did you source the MFD from ? Is it a source that might have more ?

Mine was a one off. eBay is your best bet I think.

Slightly off topic but are all vRS illumination switches on the Octy 1 i.e, window switches/lights on-off/fuel release/rear demister ect: all green illuminated??...

Only asking as all mine are red?

Yup, all green, except for the needles on the speedo, etc... they are red.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Q

I like them in red very Audi feel about it inside.
