Accidents banished from Highway Code

Ben Webster, Transport Correspondent

The word

The 1931 code advised drivers to beep their horns when overtaking

This practice is still taught to police drivers and I think can be used very effectively to let people know you are there and intend to be overtake......

Dropping "accident", however, I doubt will make a big difference!

Quite often essential to beep when overtaking on an unmarked road, as people seem to drift about all over the place without that dotted white line to keep them under control.

There seem to be a couple of schools of thought on this with quite a few people feeling the horn may be interpreted as aggression. Other option is a headlamp flash, although I think that is more possible to be missed than a beep....
