Engine oil

Featured Replies

Hello. I am a bit confused with oil types and brands. Skoda recommends Valvoline SAE10W40 oil. They told me that this oil is full-synthetic, while I noticed this oil is semi-synthetic. In addition, I was told that this oil can be used for 15000 km while everybody else says I should change them , in the worst case, every 7500 km. Can anybody recommend me oil type, or/and brand?

Thank you very much.

What car, what engine?

From ekaradimos' profile it's a Fabia 1.4 16V 101bhp/128Nm - presumably Greek spec.

Any decent modern multigrade oil should be more than capable of a 15000km service interval in a VAG engine under normal use. However, for some markets a shorter oil change interval is recommended, eg in Panama. If your engine is not subject to extremes of heat, dust, or constant stop/start city driving, then I would change the oil every 15000km. But what does the Service Schedule recommend in your case?

A multigrade high lubricity oil is better than a normal multigrade oil. The former should meet specifications VW 500 00 or 502 00, while the latter should meet specifications VW 501 01 or ACEA A2 or A3 - 96.

Longlife oil is better still, but is for cars on variable servicing with engines designed to use it - which the 1.4 16V isn't.

Thank you very much. Your advice was very helpful. This is what a dealer told me. A full-synthetic oil isn't better for this kind of engine. The important think is to be 10W40 or 15W40, no matter if it is semi or full synthetic.

Anyone who knows how many km can a 15X40 semisynthetic oil, Skoda recommends, last?

  • 3 years later...

MY FELLOW GREEK karadimos , the 15W/40 oil isn't a semi synthetic..it is a mineral oil witout synthetic basis at all.

But still it's the rigkt oil for your engine!!!

VW specs are 501.01/505.00

Now noticed it's a 3 years post....SORRY
