Battery light on all the time

Featured Replies

:( Hi, I have a 1.3MPi Felicia 1999.Unmodified or molested. I've done an engine swap put everything back and the engine starts runs fine, but the battery light won't go out. Got the rectifier replaced, put it back on, wired it up, same thing. Battery light is still on.

As far as I can make out, the Alt is earthed through the engine. The only connections are the Sensor for the tachometer and the Positive terminal.

I hope my ECU is not causing this. Any ideas folks?:(

Im my last car when the battery light came on all the time i needed a new alternator? But if this is the case usually when you give it lotsa revs for a few secs the light goes out? Welcome to Briskoda btw.

My money's on the alternator, too. Assuming you have a multimeter (seeing how you seem to be mechanically-minded!), have a good prod around making sure everything's as it should be...

And welcome to Briskoda :wavey:

Be careful prodding the alternator, as the current coming of the thing is very very high.

Good point, well made! If your meter doesn't have a high-amp setting, don't use it - and watch your fingers!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. My local grease monkey thought an extra earth of the alternator might be needed. But i rang the guy who repaired the alternator, he's telling me to disconnect the wire coming from the dash to the alternator. If it goes out then thats the problem, if not then there's a major problem. The slider connection off this alternator, the haynes manual calls it a sensor. does this feed the tacho signal? If all comes to the worse I can bring to the repair shop guy who'll check it out for me.

Hi Mate

On the alternator the common thing to go on them would be the regulator

If it goes down the light stays on as it is over charging

Check the voltage as has been said , it could be as easy as that

Sarah

the tacho signal comes from the ecu directly into the dash loom, the rpm signal comes from the hall sensor on the top of the gearbox... without this sensor the engine wont run! :o it is not connected to the alternator.

the signal wire to the alternator warning light should be connected to the terminal marked D+ on the alternator. the heavy guage current/charge wire should be connected to the terminal marked B+... the alternator is earthed internaly through the engine via a large earthing wire which goes straight onto the negative battery terminal.... if the earth strap was wasn't connected the engine probably wouldn't run and the alternator warning light wouldn't work either

Thanks for the extra info. I will check to see if its charging and i'll check the wire on the slider connection. If that's giving a duff signal it could be corroded or something. Hopefully it's just a bit of corrosion. The thoughts of taking off taht alternator again are not particularly thrilling. My one is the self tensioning belt so you have to crawl underneath and loosen it.

Found the short. The alternator is charging and regulating fine. However I checked the fuses and the radio appears to be wired directly to the permanent live and everything is wired to it as the lights are permanently on on the display. So I'll need to remove the radio and find out whats up. will keep you posted.

the radio is supposed to be on a permanant live, there is no switched live in the radio loom
