Where to buy Vag-Com???

Featured Replies

Hello, I was just wondering where is the best place to buy a vag-com cable and to also get/download the software?

I see on ebay you can buy the cables for about

Vag-Com is the software, and is downloadable from Ross-Tech: Home . They also sell genuine Vag-Com leads, which are the only ones which which can run the latest versions of the software. The cheapest way to get a genuine lead is to import it directly from the States - relatively expensive (but less so with a favourable exchange rate) and excellent service. The eBay leads may be of dubious provenance, and will need an older version of the software.

However, for 98% of what you are likely to do, an older version of the software will suffice - if you take this option just make sure you can get the right version of the software to match your cable when you buy the cable.

Thanks for the info.

Is there anywhere in particular you would recommend buying i from? I don't want to be able to do everything with it but would like to be able to get fault codes.

What car do you have?

I use an ebay cable on my mk1 octavia with no probs. Vag-com is free but is limited but you can scan the engine and pull up fault codes. There is a program called vwtool, although old its very good and its free to download. You can alter car setting etc and do scans

Although an excellent program, i personally don't think vag-com is really worth the money for a diy mechanic who just wants to do occasional code reading.

The Shareware version is "free", a fully functional licensed version obviously costs some money, 99 USD to be precise (software only, no hardware).

VW-Tool is not free, the development and sales stopped and people are trading illegal copies but there is nobody who prevents that. So it is not free and it is also limited since it won't work on certain control modules - even on an Octavia I or Fabia.

The question you should ask yourself is what you want to do on your car and maybe on others. For basic fault code reading and experimenting the cheapest way would be a 3rd party lead and the Shareware version, but if you plan on doing more like servicing yourself (oil change, repairs etc.) you will most likely need the full version which means you would get most value when buying the real/genuine stuff.

I Was just about to update my last post thanks for doing it for me.:D

All i wanted to say was vwtool works on many more modules than the shareware version of vag-com. I wish i could afford vag-com but as funds are tight and i do not own a garage this is the best option for me.

Hi

If you want to avoid trouble, or upsetting the website owners I would strongly recommend buying VAG-COM from the developers of the system, namely Ross-tech. Forget all pirated versions, as if it wasn't for the hard work put in by these guys then the system would not exist.

Buy the the real thing and you can't go wrong. I have heard that the after sales support is truly excellent.
