Smouldering wood smell - parcel shelf?

Featured Replies

Went out to the car today, and opened the boot of my Mk2 hatch. I was greated by a smouldering wood (or cardboard on a dying BBQ) smell - like when you've been drilling/sanding wood too fast if you know what I mean.

The whole of the boot area was in the sun, and had been for most of the day to that point (was approx 1pm)

The cut out for the wiper motor bulge in the parcel shelf stank of this smell and was very warm, as was the wiper motor bulge in the boot. These are the areas hottest, and smelliest.

Is this normal? Anyone else ever found this? this has me very worried. Never notices this until today, but then again not been so sunny since I got the car in April!!!!

might be worth geting the car looked at to see if the motor is still drawing power when switched off.

Is this normal?

I would say not

Nope, not normal. You need to get the motor checked out, sounds like its still drawing current and the windings on the coil could be getting hot.

Would even suggest disconnecting the battery when you leave it maybe.

another possibility, pull the fuse for the rear wiper, although I dont know what else is on the same fuse.

which is of course the less drastic solution

Seems to only happen when it's in the sun.

I'm assuming the extra heat in the motor bulge is from the wiperblade arm.

What is the parcel shelf made of? is is the carboard/glue stuff like the over for the CD changer cubby hole? If so, then I'm guessing mine's been poorly made.

i noticed this smell today, it came from the actual parcel shelf, like a plastically wood smell so im wondering if its the fabric or even the glue used to stick the fabric to the parcel shelf is reacting to the heat?

Exactly it!

Thank heavens. SWMBO claims I've gone mad!

Smell is where the wiper motor bulge sits, right? Out of interest, when was your car made? Mine's March/April 07.

How about on the next hot and sunny day you take the parcel shelf out and see what's what?

Same as yours, it might be the glue stuff as its still quite new and that?? but i can smell it more from the parcel shelf, not smelt anything from the wipe motor.

Seems to be lessening in intensity.

Am keeping an eye on it, and if it remains bad, I shall be raising with Skoda UK directly.
