Sticky Handbrake Button

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a slight problem with the handbrake on my car

When i put the handbrake down (off) the button doesnt always spring out, so when i pull it up (on) it doesnt lock. If i put it down sharply, it does pop out.

Any ideas, as though its not a major problem, its annoying :thumbdwn:

Temporary = WD40,. I took the whole thing off, cleaned and filled the underside with grease. Much better feel. Worth the effort, but mind the 12v cigar lighter wire which loops round.

Thanks for the advice

When you say "take the whole thing off" , do you mean the handbrake completely, or the button part ?

Will take the gaiter bit off sometime this week, and have a look-see.

Got to sort out the exterrnal door handles on the front driver door and rear passenger door too, they dont open the doors, and have to be opened from the inside

Hi,

Sorry if vague. You need to take off the whole centre console. It's easy, just torx at the rear and clips under the front. This lifts off and you can then slide the rubber gaiter off. No need to remove the button (I'm not sure if it's possible anyway) as you can easily push/spray upwards from the rear of the lever and get plenty on the button-rod and the rachet. Sounds a big job, but actually just half an hour at the most. Oh and remember the light that goes in the money box - if you want it back. I didn't bother.

Best of luck

you don't need to remove the whole centre console. prise out the small plastic insert immediately in front of the hanbrake, the the plastic cover will slide forward and off.

I tried that and it was OK for squirting in the WD40, but I wanted something more enduring and couldn't be sure where the lubricant had gone, hence went on to removing the console. Whilst there I cleaned and greased the top of the gearshift and springs which made a surprising difference.
