Whining sound with engine off

Featured Replies

Put the car (150bhp fsi) in the garage last night after a short run. Went back into the garage about 30 minutes later and could hear a high pitched whine from under the bonnet. Opened the bonnet but couldn't work out exactly where it was coming from but it was quite loud. The ignition etc. wasn't on. Turned the ignition on and started the car, drove it out of the garage and back in. Switched off and no whine sound. No warning lights and the car is fine today. I'd be grateful for comments before visiting the dealer. Many thanks.

I've too have heard a occasional whine noise (not very loud) from under the bonnet of my petrol vrs. I've assumed it to be something to do with the cooling system (water being pumped round perhaps). I've had no problems so its never really concerned me.

My diesel vRS has this whinning noise too. Has always been there since i've owned it, so likewise has never really been of any concern, as car runs great and has no warning lights. Always think of it as her singing goodnight to me. Sad I know.

I've heard this high pitched noise quite a few times after the ignition has been switched on/off (TDI 140). I initially thought it was the Xenon ballast packs but that was quickly eliminated.

My wife's Fabia had the same symptoms for 3 years but we never bothered to find the cause. She had no problems with the car, so it wasn't an issue.

Thanks for replies - it seems that the noise is a 'feature' so I'll ignore it until something breaks!

Sorry - can't resist - did you leave the Mother-In-Law in the boot by any chance ?

It could be the brake servo system discharging

My clio does it too. It sounds like a big electrical transformer but I've never found the cause. It's done it for 3 years now with no problems.
