Performance brake fluid.

Featured Replies

Need some new fluid for the Passat - after 1500 miles I've cooked my second fill...

What can you recommend...?

First recommendation - Learn to drive :haha:

More seriously;

Castrol RS Super DOT 4 - seeing as you are a cheapskate :D

Or Silkolene ProRace 2000 if you are rich ;)

Halfords DOT 5?

what have you been doing Tom , i know you've got a bit of a barge but to cook the fluid , i did all those laps around the Ring and Spa the other week and never had a problem , except for noisy front pads after about 30 laps at Spa , never faded though

How good is the Halfords Dot 5.1 , i am looking to put performance brake fluid in when i have my service as i am getting some Groovies and Green stuff soon. Was looking at it in Halfords today, surely Castrol is much better or is it all similar stuff?

Another vote for Silkolene Race 2000

Cheers Jon. ****. ;)

Its cooked sooo easy. I have the 312 calipers, but only 288 disks... behind 15" wheels the cooling is non-existant. The brakes are plenty powerful, until they get hot. They are pretty spongy though since I cooked it the first time... :(

The receipt I have for the current pads and disks shows they are cheap and from a local motorfactors... so thats not good either.

I only need carriers and disks to upgrade to 312s, but I'd need bigger wheels too... :( Performance fluid will have to do for now! :)

Change the pads if they are cheapies - could be pad fade rather than fluid fade.

DS2500 or similar would make a big difference.

As an aside, what's the pcd on your passat? I have some 17s from my old Octy (OK they need a refurb but for you, the budget conscious they may be remarkably cheap....)

The Halfords Dot 5.1 stuff seems to be good stuff and I've not managed to boil mine. Btw, get the Redstuff instead of the Greenstuff as they're much better, imho :D

Passat is 5x112 Jon, so thats a non starter unfortunately.

I know I'm getting pad fade too - but the sponginess has to be down to fluid, surely. They've been bled by me and the last change at my local Skoda independant - and they are lovely and firm, til they get hot, then they stay spongy.

I do need some bigger alloys, probably 17s at some stage, got to be fairly chunky to suit the passat, but open to ideas! ;)

Pads will be DS2500s for sure, with OEM 312 disks most likely. :)

Another vote for Halfords.

Also, try slowing earlier ;)

I never wrecked mine. Mine were either 2500 or 3000 pads with ProRace 2000. Survived remarkably well all things considered

This isn't from high speed runs btw, its my favourite twisties...

And here. But you need to change it more often or it will boil.

Got some Castrol super dot 4 for the clio to go in.

Also, try slowing earlier ;)

Pah! Slowing is for wimps!

agreed  carry the speed through the corners

I would go for a super dot4 rather than a 5.1, it seems more practical (5.1 should be changed every 6 months or so). I have put shell super dot4 in mine with no problems.

I do carry speed through the corners, but my favourite road has opportunities of 120+ followed by a corner at say 60... its pretty tough on the old gal.

Luckily the road is private...

Gets me thinking - could do with a Cambridgeshire meet! ;)

my VRS has never seen 120mph even at the Ring or Spa , it just won't do it , it sounds like you've got a very quick barge there Tom

and my VRS is dog slow :(

My old SDI could easilly hit 120+, both up Kesselchen at under the bridge at the end, mind I was coming out of Schwalbenschwanz at just over a ton :D

Easy 130 down Fuchsrohre too :D

i'm too busy watching the road down the Foxhole to look down at the speedo :o ,

it won't go over 115 mph , even after keeping my foot down after the last corner onto the main straight , Spa was the same , but the straight from Eau Rouge to Les Combes is slightly uphill :(

need more power ;)

That's a nice part, pretty much the fastest part of the circuit too

Saw just over 160 driving a RUF down there and nearly 170 up Kesselchen :D

Hlafords 5.1 is good stuff, I currently use this. As for the Green stuff don't bother, get Mintex Extremes and the 312's instead ;) You will not regret it!

The barge ain't quick, I'm just mental!

TBH though, I've never been overtaken down there, and I've been past an Impreza on a regular basis - and every time we stop at the petrol station for a natter! Nearly had a punchup with a motorbike rider who took serious offence to being overtaken too!
