erratic idle and start

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I have a petrol 1.6 1999 Octavia and it idles between 1300 and 600 rpm but is prone to cutting out at idle. It can also be a pig to start and smells of petrol when it does. I have been told it could be a dirty fuel/air filter.

If so , how difficult is it to chane the fuel filter ? Any clues ?

Cheers

I'd be looking at the coolant temperature sensor - common failure and just the sort of behaviour you'd expect if it was faulty. Is it more noticeably difficult to start when the engine is warm (ie not first thing stone cold)?

If it still has the black sensor rather than the later green one then it would be a very good candidate.

ta for the info. Any idea where the sensor is located so I can change it ?

The sensor will be in a housing on the passenger side of the engine, it will be a square sensor (possibly blue) with a 4 wire connection. Whats the engine code? AEE, AKL, AVU?

Also clean the throttle body.

Cheers,

The engine type is 1.6 petrol AKL . I'm assumeing that the engine trim covers need to be removed first to get at the sensor

The black plastic obsfurcation cover that the dipstick and oil filler stick through? I think you need to remove it to do pretty much anything except topping up the oil level!
