Buying A New Laptop

Hi Peeps

I have decided to replace my old laptop and after a lot of

research have shortlisted 2

HP DV9288ea from Hewlett Packard £1299

Voyager C720DC from Evesham £1399

both these choices have 17" screens and full size keyboards

as I do quite a lot of numbers imput I must have a numerical pad

I am edging towards the evesham one because they offer

a 3yr warranty and will supply it with MS xp home edition

I`m not keen on moving to vista ..... my new last year Dell

Desktop machine has xp and I`m quite happy using that

in fact I prefer to run with the windows classic look ...

So I am wondering if anyone out there has any experience

of HP or Evesham laptops ..........

All our company equipment is HP/Compaq, so all our laptops are HPs now...they're pretty good machines but don't seem to last much beyond 2.5 years, though admittedly they do have hard lives...

That's pretty good going. My non-HP/Compaq laptop is 3 years old next month and I struggle to think which bits on it are original!

At least it's still going in one guise or another, the HPs usually get written off... ;)

it'll more than likely be a Mac that replaces it

Build quality on Mac laptops these days seems to be fairly pants...I know quite a few people who've had quite major faults on them within 18 months.

My brother-in-law just spent close to £2K on a Macbook Pro when he emigrated to Oz.

Less than a month later it's away getting repaired!

I am better off with my £500 Acer laptop

Have you taken a look at the Sony Vaio AR31M? In the same price bracket but doesnt have a num pad, but a USB one of these can be bought at Maplin for £5

Sony VAIO every time. They're just so good!

I'm on my third and would never consider anything else if your budget allows (you get what you pay for). Support good, reliable, functional, powerful, vesatile... and they look amazing (except the new f series - charcoal with white stripe??? anyone can make a mistake - Newton discovered gravity but also got hit in the head with an apple!)

We've had loads of Vaios over the years and until recently they've been good. Of late (last 18mo-2yrs) the build quality has dropped right off :thumbdwn:

If you're looking at the Evesham or HP I'd say HP as we've swapped to them and Lenovo (formerly IBM) and both seem pretty good - the Lenovos are particularly robust

My personal lappy is a HP DV8295ea. Great piece of kit, only thing I can fault is the screen res is only 1440 x 900. I like high res which is why I tend to use my work lappy (a dell latitude D810) on the move (1920x1200) and my HP at home driving 3 17" screens via a matrox triple head adaptor.

Thank god you said "discovered gravity". The amount of times I've heard it mentioned that he "invented gravity" is unbelievable
