Revs

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

When flooring it / racing what sort of revs do you change gear at?

I say this because I used to drive a diesel and anything over about 4.2k wasn't worth reving over as all the power dropped off (it just makes more noise!).

I've got a mk1 vRS octy.

5600rpm (ish)

With a typical road-going wide-ratio 5speed box and standard engine, you might want to experiment around this sort of pattern:-

1-2 @ 4000

2-3 @ 4500

3-4 @ 5000

4-5 @ 5600.

The idea is to keep at about peak torque in first and second when air resistance is low, and move towards peak power revs as the road speed builds. The underlying reasoning is that torque is what actually accelerates a car; power is needed to overcome air resistance, which rises as the square of road speed.
