how to work out MPG

Featured Replies

I have a new fab RS and want to know how to work out the MPG from kilometres to miles using the on board data.....was told to divide 282.5 by the figure in the 1000km/h display......which is more often than not about 7.6 ish......this would give me an average of 37 mpg!!.....is this about right or am i using the wrong figures as this seems somewhat low and at the moment im driving like a granny!!....or maybe im just being a bit dim and doing it all wrong!!!

cheers

kit

To converk Km to miles you multiply the km value by 5/8 and Miles to km you muitlply the miles by 8/5.

To calculate the mpg I'd always work out the number of ltrs used and divide the by 4.564 which converts the ltrs into UK gallons.

then simply what ever distance you have travelled on the ltrs from above divide that number by the number of gallons used.

I think in the UK we should start to use the mile/ltr as we no longer buy fuel in gallons its pointless. And as we buy in ltrs we will then very easily be able to calculate what the per mile cost is for any vehicle.

how is your fuel economy displayed in the car.

km per gallon? km per litre ?

Litres per 100km ?

7.6ltr/100km is 37.2mpg (google)

Are you using the vRS for long or short journeys? My trip to work is only 3 miles and as such I only average 41mpg during the week(although trip reads 44mpg). However last weekend after a 200mile round trip, the trip computer was reading 57mpg.

You drive 3 miles to work....

Can you not get a bus or use your bike in the 6-8 months of the year saving the planet keeping you fit/saving you gym membership costs & saving wear & tear on your car.

With congestion its probably quicker to use the bike anyway

I used to drive 20+ miles to work but after a recent job change I'm down to 3 miles to work but I can't bring myself to sell the vRS.

I would love to cycle to work but the company I work for don't have shower facilities and I'm not going to sit in work sweaty and smelly. I live in Ireland and it's summer today, not that you'd know it. Lashing rain and dull overcast. I'm not even going to discuss buses :)

Your calculation is correct. :-) The ltr/100km display with the 1 beside it is your consumption for your current journey, reset after 2 hours of the engine being off AFAIK. Hit the reset button on the stalk to get the 1 to change to a 2 and this is your consumption over a long time(this can be reset by holding the reset button)

(hope that makes sense :))

ah go on fletch talk about public transport in dublin!!!.....give us all a good laugh on this lovely wet and dull summers day!!!:)

perhaps your display is over estimating the amount fuel used (giving you a worse figure than actual), in the inverse way to my display under estimating the fuel used and therefore painting a better picture than actual :)

i cant get the display with the one in it up on the display!!.....they all show 2!!.....unless yet again im being dim!!

Blimey I am confused now if I work out my mpg it comes to 26mpg which means I should get 260ish miles per tank yet I can only get 200miles from a 45litre tank so surley that is about 20mpg.

hmmm maybe I have done somthing wrong

  • Author

i only get 500 km out of a tank and thats about 300 miles!!....not the best really!!:(

Press the reset button on the bottom of the right hand stalk

That 47.2 is 47.2mpg over the last week or so. My car gives miles per gallon readings whereas yours give ltrs/100km

Hey Fletch with all these photos it would have probably have been quicker to go do it for him :P :P

Hey Kit RTFM :P

Btw It was the same system in the Mk1 vRS you had, you obviously weren't too worried about mpg in that :D :P

RTFM??.......didnt really care in the octy what the mpg was!!....it wasnt that kind of car!!.....but got fab to try to cut down on fuel bills......but looks like i shouldnt have bothered!!.......and this is me driving like miss diasy!!.....god only knows what it will be if i give it some beans!!!

Ah it will improve as the engine loosens up. My first week of ownership(engine at 30k miles) I got 39mpg and that was horsing the entire time. To be honest though, yeh on short journeys it ain't the best. It's only when it gets warmed up/long journeys that it starts to excel

Oh RTFM = Read The ******* Manual :D

gaff ya cheeky beggar!!!;)....il RTFM manual ya!!......could work it out on the other as it was mile per not litres per!!......and wanted to know what that was in old money!! who bleedin works anything out in ltrs?!!......i dont even know speed limits in km!!.....only that 50 is ok and 120 ok!!.....im old school!!......well old maybe!!

k:)

So come on put us out of our misery....did you get the trip computer to show a 1 in the top right hand corner as opposed to a 2?

:orb_laugh :orb_laugh :orb_laugh ...sorry couldn't resist ;)

First thing I did in the Mk2 was change the MPG etc over to Miles :) via Maxidot, not sure if it can be done through VagCom on the Furby, maybe if ya asked BPM nicely he could have a look :)
