I think there is a key slot in the glovebox ?

mm thats what the handbook says , but no key slot in her car , bok says dealer visit

I think it can probably be turned off with VAGCOM but AFAIK there may also be a safety kit (a kind of restraining kit to stop it going off ) fitted by the dealer as well at least that's what happened when my Golf had the airbag deactivated.

Also, I think you are required to display some sort of notice in the car to the effect that it is deactivated for insurance purposes.

It was an optional extra to get the 'lock' fitted, and from what I remember it was about 50 quid at order time, so I'd expect it to cost more as a retrofit IF they'll do it. Worth asking around though.

There is no retrofit, I have researched this quite deeply.

I know people who have just disconnected the bag. The light comes on but the others are not effected.
