touch up paint kit - any good?

Featured Replies

There's a small (4cm) scratch on the door of my vRS. It's taken the top layer of (race blue) paint off down to the white layer below, so it's not going to polish out. Not bad enough to get the door resprayed, but it's annoying me none the less.

I phoned the Skoda garage who say they can upply a 'touch up' paint kit, comprising of the paint and lacquer. Has any one tried to use one of these kits before? How easy is it? Any tips?

Thanks

Ade

Have you tried these mobile van blokes...........Chips-a-way or similar, round-about

I have used the touchup paint from the main dealer and its very good, as you would expect because the paint is sourced from the same factory that made the paint on the car. The colour match is perfect, the key in using it to fill a scratch is to not use the brush that comes with the kit as its quiet large, but to use a thin model brush instead and to gradually build up the paint layers in the scratch.

Yep , be very patient and use a fine brush to fill it in in a couple of layers , leaving it to dry fully each time.

...And take extra care on vertical surfaces, as gravity will cause the paint to run unless you added the thinnest of thin layers...

I asume that once the paint is built up sufficiently, and dried for long enough, a good attack with a buffer, and a suitable polish will flatten the repair and blend it in.

At some point in its life, my Corrado has been home repaired with a touch up paint. The job is that bad, i'd have prefered to see the scratches! Might give it a go though, cos if it doesn't work, I'm scheduled for a complete respray in Autumn anyway!

Yes , if you do it in a few layers then buff it back you can get a very good finish.

It's unlikely you make it completely invisible but it'll be nothing to worry about

As I found out myself, struggling to do my Fabia's boot lid, the top coat in touch-up kits will come off with nail varnish remover. Unfortunately, the colour paint won't, but it shouldn't be anything a quick go-over with wet & dry shouldn't sort out...

Thanks for advise chaps

It's a company car so I not going to fork out for 'Chipsaway' (would if it was my own car as I've had excellent result from them when i did own my own car). Equally can't be bothered for such a small scrach to go through the hassle of getting it reported to lease company/booked in to body shop etc.

I've ordered a touch up kit - the guy in parts (Pillings in Milton Keynes, helpful chap by the way) said the kit comes with a brush, but from the advise here I'll either find smaller one or trim it down.

One question - does the lacqeur only go on once I've built up the seveal thin layers of the coloured paint?

Cheers

Ade

Yes, build up the layers and make sure the paint is well and truely dry before using the laquer pen.

Thanks for all the info - will give it a go

  • 2 weeks later...

Just wondering,... how did it go?

Cheers

Andy

Slight topic tangent, but I had a touch up spray kit from the dealers earlier in the week, to spray my bonnet lifter bracket. For about

I had a very small scratch on my passenger door that some inconsiderate person had done, and instead of using the brush that comes with the kit, i used a cocktail stick and that was a good enough job for me, it left it barely visable.
