difference between polish and wax?

Featured Replies

sorry for asking a silly question but what is the difference between them as i always thought it was the samething until i read people were polishing then waxing their cars. can anyone help as iv always used a cheap turtle wax polish but want a deep shine now on my silver vrs. thanks:confused:

Polish is abrasive, wax protects the paintwork.

so you basically use poilsh to clean the paintwork and wax to give protect and shine the paintwork!! thanks for your help.

Yup, that's the basics. There's hundreds of different products out there and plenty more steps in between for soaking, shampooing, cleansing, claying, drying, masking, polishing, waxing, etc.

Never ending really.

Not personally, but have a look the range offered by the likes of Clean Your Car - car care products UK and News - Serious Performance

You might want to just go for a detailing kit to start off with, rather than buy potions from different brands. It's also easy to just end up in Halfords staring at Auto Glym or Meguiars - personally I'd steer clear and try something else.

Saying that, I don't bother with any of the above because I'm lazy and all the Auto Glym/Meguiars products I've bought in the past (my garage is full of them) are too much like hard work. I'd rather be driving the car than standing with my hand in a bucket of water :)

While I'm here, car detailing (it's not simply washing any more) advocates recommend the two-bucket method (Google it) and woollen mitts instead of sponges.

from that sounds like you are heading to halfords. best bet from them is AutoGlym Super Resin Polish. Contains a mild abraisive and will also seal the paint.

if you are looking to get rid of scratches and swirl marks then you cant go wrong with Menzerna Intensive Polish - Menzerna Intensive Polish

it works well by hand but will take some commitment to do a whole car in a day. (Unless you've got a Porter Cable or similar)

Then of course you'll have to apply sealant or wax Blackfire Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection gives a good shine and a slick surface- Blackfire Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection

If you're doing it by hand then use the white side of these for polishing Ultimate German Applicator Pad - Ultimate German Applicator Pad

( use the red side to apply your wax /sealant)

If you're going the whole hog you might want to check for contaminants on the paint and give it a clay with Meguiars Quik Clay before you polish (available in Halfrauds but you'll be cheaper if you're getting the other stuff too)Meguiars Quik Clay

So,

Wash (2 bucket method)

Clay

Polish

Seal/Wax

And remember to post pics
