Removing battery to access power steering fluid reservoir

Featured Replies

Hi, Can you tell me how to remove a battery from a Skoda Fabia 2005. I have removed the case but can;t remove the battery, i need to get access to the power steering fluid?

Not to sure what you mean?

This might help you:-

Raise and remove lid over battery , to access both terminals . carefully with a 10mm spanner release both clamps on the actual battery terminals. MIND THE SPANNER DOESNT SHORT OUT THE BATTERY TO CAR BODY. On the front outside of the battery box in the centre is a bolt and plate . This holds the battery to the car,and needs removing. When this is out the battery can be removed using the two handles on the battery. (not fitted to all batteries). To remove the plastic battery box , there are two bolts at the rear ,and one in the centre bottom of the battery box. You then need to fiddle with the air cleaner , to release the battery box.

Battery

Press the two catches on the right and left of the fuse carrier on the battery outwards and fold the fuse carrier and cover open.

Disconnect the two battery terminals

Lift the fuse carrier from the battery tray and place to the side.

Disconnect the two battery terminals.

Release retaining screw (22 Nm) and remove the locking

plate. Remove battery from tray.

Battery Tray

First remove the battery

– Unclip the fuse carrier and cover from the battery tray.

– Unhook the cable harness from the battery tray.

– Release the 3 screws (20 Nm) and remove battery tray.

Thanks I will try this when i get home. The power steering is not working on the car so I see that it is under the Battery but I couldn't remove the battery to get at it. The battery couldn't be moved at all. It seems to be wedged in place with 2 tabs on either side but was not able to move the tabs they seemed to be welded in!! I know it doesn't make sense but that's what it looked like! Will let you know how I get on :)

It could well be the common steering angle sensor problem or maybe a fuse.

I had the AA look at my car yesterday and the guy thinks that it might be a sensor or the electrics gone, that is causing the power steering to stop!! He said this is a big job and could cost alot of money to fix - is this right do you think? Only got this car in April?? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

As I said above

It could well be the common steering angle sensor problem or maybe a fuse.

Do a search on the sensor, it's very common and think you'll even find a guide on how to change it.

Stu, is that a big job to fix the steering angle sensor? Its not a fuse as the AA Guy checked that!

Hi. I have a 1.4 Y reg Fabia Classic and on that model one is not supposed to take out the battery as it can lead to other (expensive) problems simply by removing it (unless one knows what one is doing of course).

If you do a Search on here, "PAS" is a good keyword.

If the steering has gone, it could be something else apart from the sensor. Can you take your car to a garage who could do a computer diagnostic to find out what the fault actually is before comitting yourself to "a repair that might or might not do the trick"?
