A little while ago we had a discussion over on the vortex about this. Generaly it was felt that the noise was either a) the ABS system evacuating or the fuel pump building itself upto pressure ready for when you turn the key.

Can't say I have noticed any noise from behind with ignition off though.

Is the ticking sound from the engine with the engine on. I suppose it could be the Hydraulic Valve lifters. I have a quiet ticking noise, but from inside the car you can't here it.
