Displacement, CCs, CuIn etc...

Featured Replies

I have a Fabia VRS. So I know it's got a 1.9TDI PD engine.

There seem to be other engine bottom ends in the VAG lineup that might fit. In particular 2.0 diesel bottom ends.

I understand that there's a 2.0 8V bottom end in some Volkswagens and obviously there's a 2.0 in the new 2.0 TDI PD units.

Are any of these swappable with a minimum of fuss with the 1.9 bottom end on the Furby? Or is it - as always - a lot more complicated than that?

In order to preserve driveability, I'm mooting a CC increase. Bonus question, what's the limit of the engine? How big can the bottom end go and still fit the 1.9 8V PD head?

Cheers,

J.

Easier to fit a complete 2.0l engine, or even just tune (rather than bore and/or stroke) the 1.9?

This will, of course, provide you with all the necessary horsepowers and torques to take any vehicle on the planet LIKE A KING! :P

Oh hang on, it's the 2.0l petrol that you'd want for that... ;)

I am aware of performance pistons & rods you can get which will allow more power without changing the bore, and also I believe there are uprated bottom ends which give a longer stroke (therefore increasing CC by length, not diameter)

I looked into this a while back, with a european company, but have decided to leave mine stock internally and see what happens. :)

if anybody wants it, i've got a 2.0 8v petrol bottom end sitting in my shed.... come and get it!!! it's free!!

Got any links? :)

I'm not necessarily thinking of uprating internals, though that may be required. If VW do a 2.0 bottom end that will fit my current TDI PD top end without major surgery to bellhousing/clutch/mounts/head etc.

I tried searching various websites - SCN, TDICLUB etc but I can't find specs/info. Lots of mad Americans praising GT20 turbos though. :D

As said before somewhere - there's no replacement for displacement. IMO this is particularly true of diesels where we can't whack in loads of ignition advance to offset decreasing v/e and relatively long burn times.

Ideally (though I think it unlikely), a 2.2-2.4 litre bottom end matched to a GT20 turbo could produce some interesting numbers whilst remaining tootle-able for the daily grind on the M25 . With the capacity increase, it could do that without going insane on boost.

All my chatter was with a bloke on MSN - called stingray - I believe he goes by the same name on TDIclub. Sure you can find some posts of his in the power enhancements section. ;) He runs a tuning company in Hungary, or somewhere out that way. I just ummed and aahed, then realised I didn't really have enough cash to do what I wanted anyway. :D

I'm a touch dubious about the idea of a stroker crank in a diesel, cos part of the problem is with controlling piston speeds. As has already been pointed out, there's an issue with flame front velocities in a diesel, and I can't see any way that higher piston speeds will help that.

What oversized pistons can be got?

Looks like no-one wants to do internals in the UK..... :(

Not cost effective apparently..... :(

I s'pose they're right to a greater degree.... Though if specing up a sooper-dooper replacement engine, it'd be rude not to take advantage of making it bigger.

What I've found out so far....

2.0 litre is possible using VW transporter (Eurovan, 2.5) pistons. Or even get a 2.0 block in the first place.

Building a 16valve 1.9 - TDIClub Forums

In summary: 2.0 blocks exist. 2.0 8 valve pistons exist. Oversize pistons exist if that's not enough. :)

There's a way to efficiently upgrading the drivetrain (efficiency also includes
