octavia top speed

Featured Replies

I had the pleasure of testing my car out on a disused runway yesterday and found that my top speed is about 15-20mph less than book. Is this because its new ish (2k on clock) or could it be something else?

To get up to theoretical top speed you would need a very long runway to do it as the last few mph increase take an age to achieve. Last year we tried several top speed runs on a Czech runway (a long one at that) and only managed around 80% of top speed, that said on the way home on German Autobahns it was possible to attain higher speeds but like I say, it's the last few increments that take an eternity.

would a rolling road be able to give you the top speed or is it just the power it can read?

on a disused runway

:rubchin: :holmes: I suspect your "runway" was not long enough. :P

WW VRS and anyone local to me will know the runway (Abingdon) and the *******ing you get for using it when you get caught.

There is also a road that was used as well to test the top speed but that Will remain under wraps as for fear of self incrimination :wink

I have heard that the M45 is plenty long and quiet enough but I couldn't possibly comment.

What's book then? 140 sat nav?

same here thats what the cars for ;)

in theory u should be able to attain your top speed within (iirc) 5 miles as thats what manufacturers use to test top speed of cars (well VW, BMW, Audi & Fords do anyhow)so all you need is a road long enough & Flat Enough;)

The only place i have been able to do this is the autobahn here in germany. and i still had porsche's and BMW's flashing me to move over.

Should of been on the Autobahn last September when the roll was reversed :D

The bmw's and merc's hit there limiters and then asked to move out the way :D

The car in question was a Std 1.4 Octavia ;)

A standard 1.4 Octavia with 75Bhp went over 155mph:confused:

Ive got a MKII vRS with 200bhp and have only managed 156mph (according to sat nav) and that was with about 10 clear miles of autobahn.

A lot of BMW's Audi's etc on the autobahn have had restrictors removed.

Im not having a 1.4 Octavia (standard or not) got to 155mph there isnt the power in the engine to push it through the wind resistance. So either you have a car that has POLIZEI plastered all over it, have been playing a computer game or you need to lay off the drugs  (or start taking them:rolleyes: )

Mater don't rise to it, the so called 1.4 in question is in badge name only and it's meant as being an ironic reminder to those it passes. It was in fact a highly modified vRS pushing in excess of 300bhp! :P

Ahhh that explains it then.;) Cheers m8:thumbup:

I Like the idea though.

I was gonna debadge mine might get a 1.4 badge too:P

I had a 8v 1.4 astra that got up to 130mph eventually, it did have a performance exhaust and air restrictor removed. Also seemed more powerful than the 1.6 16v astra i bought after that one which would only get 5 mph faster. of course you need to count in the speedo difference so in theory you looking really at 124.

Sorry Mater didn't mean to upset you re the 1.4

Check out user Dalcac as it's his car

Another massive factor to remember is if you have a headwind / tailwind. A 15mph wind won't feel massively strong as you walk up to your car, but if you're driving into it, it makes a massive difference to your top speed. Conversely, if you're driving with it behind you, you'll attain a much higher top speed (which personally is where I reckon a lot of these high claims for small cars come from - but don't wish to start a debate on that. My 1.6 8v old astra with 83bhp managed an apparent 123mph with 110k on the clock, hmm, methinks it had some help from mother nature ;)).

Nah you didnt upset me mate just thought it was another one of those wild claims that some people come out with

Carl:thumbup:

what sort of system is that digital speed readout.

^^ Think it is a Talex?
