Traction control odd wheels.

Featured Replies

I'm having a random problem with my traction control coming on under normal driving circumstances. I have however got un matched tyres with low profiles on the front and regular on the back (just temporary till i get spacers to fit my new back wheels) woulg this differance in wheel circumferance cause the traction control system to be confused by differing wheel speeds?. Also if i decide to keep the low profile tyres (mistake by wheel retailer) is it possible to re-calibrate the ecu to represent true speed and mileage.

I hope that when i eventually get my rear wheels on that this problem will go away other wise I gonna have to buy another complete set of new tyres, the right size this time. bloody Rimstyle say that 215 40s on a 17 rim is standard fitment for an Octavia and refuse to chage them for me saying its my mistake etc even though i told them the standard skoda tyres are 205 50s. Dont buy wheels from these guys unless you are going to see them before you've paid.

Yes that will upset the tcs and abs for sure. It will assume for example that the front wheels are spinning if they are rotating faster than the rears.

The speedo cannot be calibrated from a dealer point of view for a non recomended tyre size.

215/45's would be correct as would 225/40's but not 215/40.

rimstyle are adament that 215 40s on a 17 rim is what they are getting for a recommended fittment from thier computer I've tried every argument I can but they are unbudging leaving me only the option of legal action or changing the tyres at my own cost.

will the traction control start working again when all 4 are the same even if they are too small or will there be further problems. I calculated the differance is 2.5% in circumferance so all my speeds and milage will be 2.5% out.

They will be fine if they are all the same rr.

And despite wha thier computer tells them take your owners manual in with you.

Rimstyle are just plain wrong then AFAIK!

Any literature I've got states 205/50R17 as the only standard size on 17s, and 205 as the widest tread on any wheel size.

225/40R17s are a good (and cheaper) alternative, since they're only 1% different in nominal rolling radius, and that could be made up by a reduction in the amount of sidewall flexing.

I told Rimstyle that Skoda should have 205 50s and they said to me that what Skoda recommends is irrelevant and that thier computer was correct and this is what they would sell (215 40s) to anyone with an Octavia or golf mk 4 variant. I wonder how many people they've ****ed off. I wish I had the time, money and know how to drag these fools to small claims court. I'm just gonna have to get the tyres changed myself and try to re-coop my losses when i sell my old wheels.

What size are Fabia wheels? If I had my 215 40s from my new Konigs put on my old 17" Octy VRS wheels would they be a good fit for a furby?

If I was talking to a company that took that sort of attitude with me, I'd be saying something like "See that lump of wood over there, Yes the door. Now watch me going through it, never to return!"

have a word with your credit card company or I think small claims court is

Are Rimstyle an English company? Small Claims actions don't work the same way in Scotland, and the OP's in Embra.

Shouldn't the "accepted" upgrade replacement for the 205/50/17's be 225/45/17 ???!!!

I thought that one was within a gnats whisker of the original rolling diameter.

Spot on bud, they should sell quickly.

Indeed, 215/40 is spot on for the Fabia on 17s

The fudge-factor of the speedo can be adjusted using an EEPROM if your any good with hexidecimal conversions... and brave! Theres a little bit of info on the web about this, but I'd avoid it tbh.

Just bite the bullet, get some 225/45s and flog the tyres to a Fabia owner. :)

I don't know how the conversion factor is used, but I could rework it given the original, and the formula it's used in.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I wish I had the time to fight these idiots at Rimstyle (they are in Kent and i'm in Edinburgh) Here are the lessons i've learned.

1) If there is an option for 0% finance take it, companys are more willing to help you if you owe them money.

2) Use a credit card and not switch because you have no protrection with switch.

3) Although the internet is often cheaper and quicker, nothing beats checking out your purchases hands on before you pay.

Ah well we live and learn I guess. I'm gonna go with the tyre swapping option and sell my Vrs wheels with the 215 40s to a Fabia owner or something.
