HID fitting how to anyone?

Featured Replies

Has anyone done a how to on HID fitting? i know a few of you have done it on the octy 2.

Just curious where you mounted the Ballasts - any clever places to hide them?

Also did you take the whole light cluster out when fitting? etc etc

I have done the conversion before but not on my RS as yet!

Like to have it clear in mind before i mess it up! lol

Any help or pics would be great!

Thanks in advance! :)

I'm hoping to do this aswell at some point. Any info would also be useful to myself.

I don't remember anyone posting up details of an Octy II with them on?

Just make sure that you buy some that are compatible with the car's CAN BUS system.

My dealer fitted mine so I can't tell you if the light cluster had to be removed but I doubt it.

As far as the placement of the ballasts is concerned I can take some pics of mine and post them but they are not hidden in any way (and look rather ugly in an otherwise very tidy engine bay).

I will do one if i get some pointers to start with - like which coloured wire goes where and where the ballasts were mounted.

I remember a few people saying they had done it - but as you said no how too's

What size are the dipped beams anyway so i can order them now

Here is mine.

They are tightened under the headlight assembly.

Bear it in mind if you go ahead and fit them as you may find there is a clampdown on this as they become more popular.

The crux of the argument is the exact point where the light is generated, the HiD arc is much smaller and more intense than a halogen bulb filament so the light pattern can be different. I had this problem on a MkI Octavia and they were removed quickly.

I'm not being a killjoy or trying to start a massive debate but you should be aware that HiD CONVERSION kits are a grey area.

Thanks for the pic

Thanks for the thread - but i have made my mind up.

I did a HID conversion on the main beams on my Octy 2 about a year ago and maybe these will help you out?

The car has factory fit xenon

Haha, you have made it just like me.

And you can always change the original H1 back if you need.

a word of warning ,the fitting of hid light systems to a lens made for halogen bulbs is ilegal as the beam patern is all over the place and would fail an MOT,

check out an artical in auto expres ,sorry can't remember which issue

Even the DFT don't specifically say they are illegal but do state they must be type approved.

The reason they are popular is because it's very difficult to retrofit OEM xenons to a car as they need to integrate high pressure washers and self levelling to comply with the correct regulations.

For a few hundred quid you can whack an aftermarket kit in and get simliar results. A lot of people do it specifically for the beam colour and aren't too fussed that the beam pattern is crap. As long as it doesn't dazzle oncoming drivers and the colour isn't something silly like 10,000K the police aren't too inclined to start pulling people over..............for now.

Has someone got a picture of a oem xenon light cluster?

as for MOT's i have an after market conversion on my M3 10000K blubs and it sailed through its MOT.... nothing wrong with the beam pattern. - i dont want to have a bun fight about this though! wasnt what my post was about - simply asked for help and advice on fitting!

I want to compare a factory xenon cluster against my halogen ones......

I don't think there is any discernable difference from the outside, the lens looks the same but I don't know if the cut off is the same shape, I had 2 Octavia's parked next to each other, one with Xenons and one without and you can't tell the difference by looking.

TBH I don't think there is a big issue with the MkII projector lens headlamps as they use a sharp cut off regardless of the light source, the problems arise with rear reflector headlamps.

The whole light fitting also looked the same when viewed with the bonnet up, I would guess that the "guts" of the xenon system are neatly stashed in the light fitting.

thanks for that! i was under the impression projector lenses were fine.........

It would surprise me if the lenses were exactly the same
