Octavia RS (2004) - front end noises

Featured Replies

I know there are numerous threads of a similar vein on the forums, but I need to let off steam.

I have had knocking/ creaking noises coming from the front of my car for the last couple of months now. I brought the car back to the dealers and they initially diagnosed worn ARB bushings, so I got them replaced. The noise persisted, and again I brought it back to the dealers again, and this time they diagnosed radiator mounts needed replacing. My fiancee collected the car on Friday evening, and when I got home from work and took it for a drive, the noise was still there

At this stage, I have contemplated injecting a couple of dozen cans of expanding foam into the engine bay. It has cost me

Perished top mounts?

What sort of mileage has the car covered?

Is it on standard suspension?

I've just changed to a full KW coilover set-up and my top mounts have lasted about 1,000miles before giving up (though the car had previously covered 100,000miles + on the standard set-up)

I rang up for some arb bushes today. Apprently the arb moving about in the bushes is a known fault. From what i gathered some bars were ground down at the point of the mountings and 17mm bushes were fitted instead of the 19mm bushes(on a vrs). This should have eliminated it.

The bloke i spoke to at avs said some people we squeezing 17mm bushes around a 19mm bar to tighten them up.

Think i will order both 17mm and 19mm bushes and try to squeeze em in.

I had same sort of noises on my, wasn't the arb/ bushes cause i had new one fitted just 3weeks before, it was driving me mad really load down back roads and lane's so got it booked in again to be looked at. Turned out to be the middle exhaust bracket had broke i still find it hard to believe that all the noise was coming from there but now it's fixed not a single sound!!

i have had clanging noises that originated from the front disc brakes

Take a look at the centre exhause mount, front end of my car squeaks and i've had the arb & bushes done, rad mounts and new suspension bits and it still makes the noise - only hope is the exhause mount. Search for it theres a few threads on it somewhere.

My squeaks from the front vanish when it rains so Im guessing ARB bushes. Will have to get these checked.

Hi mate, mine does exactly the same thing, sounds like an old pram when its warm and dry, stops when it is wet, this is my second VRS, the first one did it at 20K and 30 K then I stuck a R32 23mm ARB on it as an upgrade, never did it again. The problem with the 19mm ARB is that at the mounting points it has plastic bushes moulded on, it is these that crack then the creaking starts, if you want I'll dig out the old one from my last car, I noticed for some bizarre reason that it is still floating round my garage, and take a photo of the bushes on it to show you the problem....if your car is under warranty ask them to fit the 23mm one or just get it done else where and pay for it....I guarantee that you will have no creaking with that on!

So the plastic moulding on the arb sits inside the rubber mounts and cannot be replaced?

Also why does rain stop the noise as the plastic is under the bushes?

Thanks

Any more gen on the 23mm one, costs etc? Cheers.

It's a Golf R32 bar and is around

Part numbers would be very handy, can I get the bushes/brackets from VW to save time? I think Im off that day but could be slightly hungover after Saturday night however :D

Im sure Ive spotted the ARB from the engine bay and it does appear to have sleeves protruding out from the bushes.

23mm bar is 1J0 411 305 AF

Cheers for that, most helpful.

I have 48k miles on the clock, on a standard suspension. I have already done the jubilee clip fix on the exhaust centre mount. I can't help feeling that it's the ARB bushes even though they were replaced 2 weeks ago. Might get back to the dealer and suggest the 17mm bushes.

That will be another €120+ gone.

The list of things replaced/ repaired on this car in the last 7 months is getting rediculous.

2 x window regulators

central convenience unit

central convenience loom

climate control flap motor issues

exhaust centre mount (jubilee clip fix)

ARB bushes

Radiator mounts

I was really sure my arb mounts were knackered so last night i went and had a look. They looked difficult to get so i left them.I noticed the radiator made a little chittering noise when pushed forwards and backward at the bottom. So i got my drill and bolted the botton plastic of the radiator to the flat metal bar which runs along the bottom of the radiator. I then pushed the bottom of the radiator again to make sure it had stopped chittering, it had. :)

I did not think this would cure it. This morning there was no noise at all.

Might be woth a try just pushing the bottom of the radiator to see.
