Question about subwoofers

Featured Replies

Hence the reason i was asking about the JBL's.

Doing a bit of reading on the VQ's at the moment.

Whats the deal with the moveable pole thingy..(excuse my lack of knowledge) :D

it's to do with the amount of Q the sub produces, i have no idea what that actually means but it seems to affect the strength of the magnet. i notice your fairly local, i could show you what they are like and try describe how it works. it seems to be if you are using the subs in a lot of space then you dont add an insert and in your case of having a very tight space you would add in the bigger of the two inserts to make the sub work harder (or something like that). i do recommed those particular items though as the sound quality is top notch and the design has been around for a few years and infinity have never seen the need to replace them with a newer model, the old saying 'if it's not broke then don't fix it' applies with these woofers.

read this AMG FRONT PAGE

Its all down to the parameters of the sub. A tool like winisd will give you an idea on the size of box needed or how it will sound in box size x. A 10 inch sub may need a bigger box than a 12 to get the best sound. Its all down to the sub in hand.

Cheers for the link John. :)

KTP, didn't notice you were in Edinburgh. I live in Port Seton, but work in town.

Maybe a chance of taking a peek at some point ? ;)

not a problem, subs are currently out of the car as i took everything out when my octy was smashed and not got my fabia yet to have them installed, hoping to get them fitted in the next couple of weeks if i get the time.

Yep, mines a 12". :)

I rekona 12" should fit no problem into what i've got...

Either that, or do you think adding another 10" would make an improvement ?

Suppose that depends on my amp aswell ?

i dont knwo if anyone has mentioned this as i may have missed it but head over to Talk Audio as they really know there stuff (not saying you guys dont) but they will probably have more experience in different subs so will be able to guide you to what your looking for and what things you may be able to do to improve what youve got etc.

i personnaly would consider building a new box as that way its mroe personal and you can build it to suit your replacement sub. i would also consider going ported however if space is an issue then you may not be so keen on it.

seriously though head over to talk audio as they have helped me out a lot over the years. pm me if you do go over there aswell i ahve the same name as here.

ill try and read though this post in detail in a moment incase ive missed anything that i may be able to help you with.

EDIT

JBL are probably have the best value for money range available at the moment offering a lot of power and sq for not a lot of money.

JL are pretty good and offer some very good products. looks like youve got a good amp there.

IMO you wont gain much from simply upgrading to a 12" version of your sub. you would be better off with a better designed box, i.e go ported, or a more powerful sub and amp combination.

Thanks for the advice Rich.

But i'm presuming that Talk Audio are down south ?

I'm up near Edinburgh.

sorry i should of mentioned its a forum Talk Audio - Mobile Electronics Online Magazine . theyve helped me loads and really know there stuff on there. just be aware there are a few keyboard warriors on there who think they know best but there is enough people who really know there stuff correct them.

the amg page some one posted a link to is run by a guy who is on there some times he goes by the name ef max and he really knows his stuff when it come to box design. he charges for his designs but they are definatly worth paying for.
