Question about subwoofers

Featured Replies

Currently i have a 10" Sub in a custom made boot build, which was in the car when i bought it. (all built by joel_vrs a few years ago)

Now, i was looking to change this to a 12" for some deeper bass.

Is it just a case of cutting a larger hole, installing a new sub and hey presto ?

Or does the acoustics of the box/build make a difference ?

I'm not 100% up on stereos.. :(

Thanks

Johnny. :)

Different subs need different amounts of air to work efficently, a 12" one will need more air than 10". The current sub box may have been oversized, so it may work ok with a 12". You need to work out how much air the current sub box provides and calculate if its any use for the 12" sub.

You could do with knowing the internal size of the box in cubic feet/litres,that way you can buy a 12" sub which will work in the size box you have.

There's a fair bit of room in the current sub box,

Here's a couple of pics of how it looks..Apologies for the small pics.

If you changed the sub for a bigger one then the air space inside the current box might not be the optimum size for the new sub. If you want deeper bass then generally a larger air space inside the box works better, with a smaller air space giving a tighter sound. One more thing to note, if you do get a 12" sub then is your amp powerful enough to run it?

When you buy a sub, say for instance a 12" type R, it will come with instructions and airspace required. It will also say the RMS rating and at what load (given in ohms). These all need to match a box and amp to get the best sound. Although it's preferred to have a more powerful amp and not driving it as hard.

Infact, those pics are wrong.

Here's the current setup.

I havent had bass boxes for a few years now, but personally i would go for a bigger box as a 12" needs loads more space and wont sound as good without the extra space.

It will depend on the sub in question. I had a 12" sub in the pick up and that required a very small box.

Hmm...maybe not worth doing as i cant afford to lose anymore boot space as i need to carry a babies buggy in the back, and it currently fits.

Like I say it depends on what sub you want to fit.

12" sub enclosure and part of it was blanked off as it was too big.

Hmm..maybe the box i have would be alright then.

I've not actually chosen one yet, but the box basically goes all the way back to the inside of the wing, so i'm sure one would fit.

Just need to find a decent sub ! ;)

go for an infinity kappa perfect 12vq

you can change the block in the magnet depending on space, thats what i ran in my octavia and they were fantastic.

Most 12" subs require about 1 to 1.5 cuft in a sealed box, you need to find out the capacity of the box and what the displacement of the sub is. The box looks quite big so you may be ok to fit a 12" sub.

Thanks again folks.

KTP, would you definately recommend the Infinity sub ?

I used to run a JBL 12" years ago, but they seem awfully cheap these days.

Are JBL any good ?

I used to run 2x 12" jbl's years ago and they were much better than the one i have now that said the box i have now is an of the shelf job and the box then was a custom job fine tuned for the speakers.

The one i have now sound's fine maybe sometimes a bit boomy but the head unit controls help with this

HTH

KTP, would you definately recommend the Infinity sub ?

I have two of them and so far found them to be the best sub's i have bought, the finish on them is great for looks also, i got mine through ebay and paid around

I have an alpine sub like the one in the picture on the first page you can make me an offer on! Still boxed and everything, and I have the correct carpeted box for it if that floats your boat. :)

Is it a 12" Tom ? oo-er :D

I had a feeling that JBL had kinda gone downhill a bit, they may not have, just seem rather cheap compared to what they used to be.

KTP, thanks for the link, i'll take a peek. :)

I heard 2 JL audio subs years ago in a chavelier with compressions drivers up front that was some serious kit. It was awesome

I think the model number was somwthing like this one http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/12W3v2_MAN.pdf

I never heard anything like them before or since

Mind you this was the latter half of the nineties at some point so there may be much better kit avaliable these days

When i look these days most stuff seems a hell of a lot cheaper than back in the day when i was a bass junkie

agreed, i've spent thousands over the years on car audio products with not a lot to show for it but got more of a shock when i recently priced up a new amplifier, everythings coming down in price instead of the usual rising. sub's are at least half the price they were 5yrs ago and your also getting better equipment for your money.
