vrs mk1 stiff gearbox cables???

Featured Replies

my vrs has always had a bit of a bad gear selection.

i dont think its the gear box as once you get the hang of it its very sweet. I think its to do with the cable change gear set up.

The gear stick does not pop straight back into the middle of the box when put in nuteral. It just all seems a little sluggish / stiff.

Anyone else had this? what can i do to sort it? its only done 62,000

thanks

I would try changing the gearbox oil. There are a few threads on here about how much a change of oil makes to the gear change.

Or you could change the lower engine mount for an uprated powerflex one. It feels a bit harsh at first but soon softens nicely and stops excessive movement which in turn helps with gear selection

And it's only about

Or you could check the cable adjustment, or this and "all of the above".

I've just had my cables changed to cure a gear change like stirring a bowl of porridge. My problem I guess came about due to cable damage when the engine was out of the car and cables had probably become kinked when rolling it back and forth.

Apparently the inners can melt. Could they have dropped down a bit and now be sitting a bit too close to the downpipe? Worth a look....

Yep had this exactly.Gear selsection was ok ( harder finding third) but did not spring back to middle.

Look at where the linkage fits on to the top of the gear box (in engine bay) and take it off.The pin is surrounded by 2 plastic collets take them out and clean out the hole where the collets fit with emery cloth and refit.

The problem was that the gear change knuckle is made of some kind of alloy which corrodes and pushes the collets onto the pin stopping it working. So the gunge needs cleaning out.

P.s don't lubricate, it doesn't work.

how much to get this done at a gargage? martzinuk did it make it spring back into nutrel?

Also is their any risk of me making a hash of it and not being able to get my gears??

thanks.

Yes its springs back like new now.I was well happy after i had fixed it. The only problem might be trying to get the pin and collets out of the knuckle as they do seize up due to the alloy corrosion.

Should not cost much at a garage.

I'm a bit busy refitting my bathroom at mo to take pics :( but if you look at in the engine bay on top of the gear box and get someone to wiggle the gear stick from side to side you will see the knuckle causing the probs moving.

You may find seeing and reaching the relevant area easier if you remove the top obsurcation cover, and the air filter and trunking.
