PD130 turbo: KKK & Garrett

Would there be any point in swapping the standard vRS KKK turbo for a Garrett unit, used in Golf Mk4 and Audi A3 PD130 installations? I think it would be a 1749VA...

Wondering in terms of remapping potential; would a custom remap from Jabba, for example, produce better results if a Garrett was being used, rather than the KKK?

Also what would be involved in the swap? Is it more of less a straight swap, or more complicated than that?

I had a Garrett GT17 put in mine from the PD150 engine. As far as I am aware the Garrett turbos are more reliable and stronger than the KKK units. I asked the garage how difficult it was to fit and they said it was relatively easy.

Combined with other mods such as an FMIC I think there's a higher tuning potential than with a KKK but you'll always hit the wall in terms of torque and how much the standard clutch can cope with.

Steve - isn't there a very recent post from one of the Site Sponsors in which they advertise Garrett turbos and state they are sturdier than the KKK and also that they produce more power and have more tuning potential ?

The Garrett is a better turbo and will make abit more power that a KKK. Its also much stronger. We also do some nice Garrett hybrids that will give upto 245 bhp with the right mods

I'm still in the market for a new one; don't think I can afford to jump upto a hybrid at the moment though....

If you can get hold of a reasonable Garrett GT1749VA , you should find that they're worth proper money off turbo-dynamics hybrid kit etc.
