Headlight re-alignment after fitting new bulbs?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I fitted some new sidelights and dipped beam headlights to my Fabia vRS after much kaffuleing (not much bloody room there is there!). I fitted Osram Cool Blue sidelights and those new Philips Xtreme (very good by the way, very white and good vision)

However now my alignment seems to be out..... I have a huge wall of light going up the left hand side and the beam pattern seems to be all over the shop.

Would any MOT place be able to re-set the beam correctly (ATS, Kwick Fit, Nat Tyres) and if so how much is it likely to cost?

Many thanks

Joel

Is the bulb fitted flush in the aperture? Sometimes they can look like they are in and actually not be. You shouldnt have knocked the lights out by fitting the bulbs as you dont touch the adjusters when fitting. Id check the bulb again to see if it is seated properly.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid.... but do the rest of you get quite a large wall of light up the left hand side?

I've checked the bulbs I thought they might have been in upside down or something but thats impossible as they wouldnt sit in the slot.

my lights also seem to point quite far to the left, i just assume thats the way they are as to not blind people coming towards you.

i think my lamp units arent quite sitting right tho, one is very close to the bonnet where as there is a bigger gap on the other one.

I have the Philips Extreme and they are very good. It could just be that you are used to poor yellow light and now you have much whiter light thats a lot brighter. You might notice ppl flash you because they think you have your main beams on. I get it a lot as they are bright!!

I drive on quite a lot of back country roads with high hedges and on the left I get a huge wall of light with quite a lot of different lines and patterns in which makes me think it may be wrong...hmmm

If you have any doubts then take it your local garage and get them to check it for you.

Any chain MOT place should be able to do it right? Dont they have a light machine?

Yes, they have instruments which measure the height of the light.

i just ordered some metal blue H7 bulbs and quad LED sidelight bulbs, hopefully they should clean up the front end :D

anyone know what type of bulb the foglamps are, i may upgrade those also.

any mot station can check this for you and can have this done and dusted in a couple ofminutes, i did this a few times with my astra when i had it and the tilt sensor packed up on one side only and as i was only keeping the car another 6-8 months decided against paying for the light to be taken apart and the tilt mech refitted /fixed.

On my current octy the xenons do the same as you describe, apparently its set to uk and you will have what i describe it as a ski slope effect on the left and flat line to the right and yes it takes a lot of getting use to.

The fog lamps are H3, same as the main beam lights

Check to make sure they're not in upside down

I checked that. There are grooves in the unit and bulb so they cant be fitted snugly upside down

I drove my old Rover 400 for a year lighting up the trees on the side of the road/blinding oncoming traffic before an MOT raised the fact that they were in upside down. Woops! :P
