basic suspension improvement advice

Featured Replies

hi there ladies and gents, looking for some help from those with experience...

i have a octy mk1 vrs (only mods power based so otherwise std in the chassis and sus department) and its great... BUT... it doesnt handle like my lowered focus used to, infact i found out last night on a large roundabout near me that the back end gives in at about 10mph earlier than the focus.

im not after anything expensive and i dont want to lower it anymore than it already is... ive heard that bigger anti roll bars and suspension bushes from powerflex make a BIG difference to the cars stability. Is this true?are the parts hard/expensive to fit(any prices even if only educated guesses appreciated)

thanks.

An uprated rear anti-roll bar makes such a huge difference to the way the car handles!

Worth every penny, I don't know why it took me so long to do mine!

what characteristics does it change? i assume grip is improved, whats it handle like on the limit?

more/less understeer than before?

harder to gauge the back end before it lets go?

more stable under hard braking/cornering?

If you buy an adjustable one (Neuspeed do an adjustable one) then you can adjust it from mild > medium > stiff.

At the stiff end it's more likely to give the car the tendancy to oversteer.

It's difficult to describe, but before I fitted mine the front and back end of the car felt un-connected, there was flex in the body of the vehicle.

Now the rear ARB is on it feels much more positive and connected. Roundabouts are so much fun now!

Well, until it rains, at which point it will understeer like a pig!

any other mods that are recommended?

  1. The Powerflex bushes on the front wishbones are a must!!!
  2. Do the rear beam mounts if you have coilovers fitted, otherwise they're probably okay to be left as standard.
  3. Only fit the rear ARB mate, you cancel out the effect by fitting a bigger front ARB, the car in standard form will tend to understeer, but this will be balanced by the rear ARB by inducing lift off oversteer.
  4. Top strut brace's are a waste of time (albeit I have one on mine....) they do $od all, the lower brace is certainly worth while however and does make a small difference.

Anything after this involves replacing springs and shockers mate.

cheers steevie, are the front wishbone bushes difficult to do?

Got to agree with the above - rear ARB make an huge difference, and front braces stiffen it up nicely.

I fitted both top and bottom front braces at the same time so can't say which makes more difference :D

Pimp My Skoda!
