scratch x and machine polishing

Featured Replies

can you use scratch x with a machine polisher or just by hand?

I used it by hand but it would be quicker and less sweaty with a machine. Its very good stuff

Just take it easy and don't burn through and you should be OK.

Its possible, but I would advise caution, even with a random orbital such as the PorterCable. It's a fairly agressive compound, and when you combine it with a machine spinning at a fair few RPM, it could prove an issue with your clearcoat :)

I'd much rather use something like Mezerna's Intensive Polish, for heavier correction. Polished Bliss stock it.

If you want a definite answer, give Meguiars UK a ring. They're a helpful bunch

Steve

I used Meguiars Scratch X with a 4" cutting pad on a Porter Cable. Did the whole car but kept the speed at the slowest and didn't press too hard. Used about 3-4 passes and found that removed all the swirls and marring I had on the paint. Scratch X didn't seem to dull the paint as much as other cutting compounds either, as I went over the car with Autoglym Ultra Deep Shine and it didn't make that much difference.

As said above, be very careful with using it as with a 4" pad it needed hardly any effort at all to remove any marks on the paint. If the defects aren't that bad it may be safer using a 6" cutting pad instead.

Tip: Before you do anything to the car, make sure the paint is prepared properly. May be worth washing the car with Fairy Shampoo to remove any old wax etc, then use a clay bar with lots of lubricant.
