what a legendary car!!!:)

tis a shame them frenchies didn't think about it a little harder.....if they had tried that little bit harder they could have actually made it impossible to remove the timing belt.......

anybody else ever worked on them?? what a pig of a job it was getting the head off today:thumbdwn:

16mm nut on the back of the tensioner , accessed from the back of the block iirc

exhaust manifold is a pig as well , they crack also

i have one fitted with the 1.9 16v engine, had to change the way the engine sat so it would be easier on the driveshafts, meant cutting a hole in the bulkhead to allow the exhaust a little movement.

yup... they are a complete pig!

You'd have thought the offending parts would have surrendered a bit quicker than that :D

Oil change is a doddle though :)

Take it you are talking about a 1.9 GTI as the 1.6 had a good amount of space around it compared to the 1.9 IIRC.

I saw the process of a cambelt change on 'Wheeler Dealers' on Discovery , it looked a complete pain in the butt , rather that than a knackered engine tho!

I dont think that workin on a 205 is going to be as bad as my current project.

Im doing an engine swap on a 306 git6, access to almost everything is a pain, however going to do the cambelt, clutch etc whilst it is out.

:iagree: what a silly idea.... i'l admit, i actually had to look in the workshop manual to find it too because it's not imeediately obvious how it works.. apparantly the later ones had a normal twisty tensioner:rolleyes: , but this a real old skool E reg one, probably one of the best looked after, best condition ones i've ever seen, with only 67k on the clock too:thumbup:

and yes, the manifold is cracked:O

the 1.6 and 1.9 both share the same engine block and cylinder head, it's just the length of the stroke on the crank that is different, so physically the engine is the same size

I preferred the R5 GT turbo.Still have fond memories of that little gem:D.

Shame it was'nt built a little better though.....
