Selling my car on eBay

Featured Replies

Just after some general hints and tips on selling my Octavia VRS on eBay.

I have decided (or rather SWMBO has) that the VRS has got to go.

This weekend eBay are offering free car listings. I have traded on eBay for some time but never cars.

I obviously want to get the best price possible but need to know what others experiences have been like.

I am considering a Buy it Now price but allowing offers or a low start with a reserve.

Not sure which would be best with my car (2004 VRS WRC 77/100)

Set the buy it now price @ what you want....If your in no hurry to sell it why let it go cheaply

I don't really want the car to go so I am not in a huge rush but sensibility kicks in.

I was unsure of the value of the car or what I could realistically achieve. I do not want to outprice the market.

I was thinking the buy it now option with offers allowed may attract a bit more attention.

Lots of VRSs sell on eBay but often they are very reasonably priced.

1) don't take bids from anyone without 100% positive feedback, and at least 10 feedback... then you should have genuine accounts. (less than 100% you could say to ring you, and convince you they're genuine, but I'd remove the bids) state your right to remove bids if you wish.

2) alot of cars are bought from e-bay using FAKE bankers drafts... if they pay by bankers draft, take it to the bank and deposit it in your account before handing the keys over...

3) ask buyer to bring proof of ID (i.e. drivers liscence or passport) and then make SURE they fill out the correct part of the V5 with the CORRECT details.

4) add "I reserve the right to end the auction early, as I have the car advertised elswhere.." (get out clause)

thats all I can think of.... I'd do a buy now price, but still start the auction low, and still put your reserve on...

hope that helps!

shark.

I've sold 4 cars on ebay now and found it nice and easy everytime (I actually prefer it to autotrader!). With your car I'd probably set the buy it now price a little bit higher than you want and run a 7 or 10 day auction with a reserve.

If you spend a bit of time and write a decent description it should sell quite well. Are you going to put it on Pistonheads as well??

edit: I'll also agree with everything sharkrider said. I think as long as you're sensible, you'll be fine

Makes no difference it can still be cancelled ;)

If your not in a rush I would try PistonHeads first as E-Bay is not much cop as everyone wants things for nothing :thumbdwn:

You will probably get less money for it through E-Bay.

Good luck with the sale

Thanks all.

I put it on PIstonheads last night.

Just thought I would give eBay a go as it is free listings this weekend.

Why dont you just P.X if your getting a cheaper car to run "I dont meen cheaper in price I meen cheaper to run" as its a lost less assale

I would go even further and also contact the branch of the bank who issued the banker's draft to confirm the draft is genuine and the amount is true before handing anyting over.

A proper banker's draft won't bounce like a cheque but if its counterfeit(?) or forged you're up the brown creek sans paddle.

hhmmmm... I hearby update my caution over bankers drafts! you used to be able to trust them as cash... seems everyone is out to scam you nowadays :o

Its a sad state of affairs. I don't think it widespread but I have heard of it happening. Your insurance company won't be interested, the police won't be particuarly bothered as its fraud not theft and you'll have no car and no money.

Auto Trader UK - Forged Bankers Drafts

You can't trust anyone nowadays:(

EDIT: I remember reading this when it was originally published: A cautionary tale - Telegraph

I am after a cheaper car, leaving me enough to buy a caravan aswell!!!

No jokes about being sad!!!

I sold my Octy on ebay yesterday. Well it was on ebay and someone came and bought it so i pulled the auciton early.

Took me two attempts but i only paid about £9 to put it on, with loads of pics too.

I set my reserve at the least i would take for the car, which was also what i had been offered trade in. I set the buy it now price a bit higher. Ended up getting somewhere in between.

Got £100 deposit of the buyer. He is coming tomorrow evening with the rest - in cash:)

The new owner is a 71 yr old grandad by the way

Hopefully you guys won't mind me still knocking around on here when i get my new motor.:)

What is your new motor? Im in the same boat - I am only a skoda owner until weds :o

I did a trade in - I would have done the same as you but certain factors like a **** taking a key to the complete side off my car made me go to a dealer and tbh I was really really pleased with what I got for my damaged vRS with 32,000 miles on the clock...

Enjoy your motor! (Post up some pics when you get it)

Rob

I'n no longer a skoda owner, but I'm still an enthusiatst... I still go to the meets (and host them) and have fun (except the VAG type meets)

I also hope I can help the members of the site, after all I did have 80k in two years in a fabia vRS, and may well still be a skoda owner in the future! :)
