Fibre Optic Repeaters

Featured Replies

Just got back from class and apparantly, according to the teacher, fibre optic networks dont have repeaters. Not wanting to be a smart **** in the class and either embarrass myself or the teacher I didnt say anything, however I distincly remember in A level physics that in fibre optic networks the light attenuates and also you get multipath dispersion, so repeaters are put into the networks ever couple of km.

So, my question is simple - who is wrong, because Im clueless now?

Yes!

Hmm, am shocked - no imaginashun these young uns. All these aids too - calculators, mobile phones.........

In my day, we had to go round to a friends to play with Lego, to a rich friends to watch TV (Hey, and here I'm not kidding, not that I ever do :P ).

Yup, give your teacher a slap :)

Or if you're feeling *really* devilish, ask him about a transmission medium that has zero attentuation over distance, and then point him towards the laws of thermodynamics ;)

TBH if you've only come across LANs you probably won't have seen one as the longest fibre run on a typical LAN is generally piddling compared to the capability of the fibre. Get into regional and national comms and they're far more common.

OK, I'm truly (inter) phased at this point :(

Goddamn modern technology, geeks, students, mobile phones. :P

In my day .................:o

Well I know for definite that SDH networks have repeaters. Normally just a MUX with in and out cards and no drop offs.
