Coolant Light

Featured Replies

I got the flashing coolant light this morning when I started the vrs.

After checking the level which was just above the minimum and seeing that the probes were still in coolant in their little resovior I had a quick read on here, scraped them lightly with a screwdriver and put a small amount of water in (about 200 ml max).

Checked the level after warm up and when I got to work, all seems ok and no temperature problems.

I'm waiting for a call back from the dealer, and will probably call into a local vw dealers on the way home to pick up some new coolant but should I be worried about adding a little water (if this is just a one off?)

Update: just spoke to the dealer who suggested a new bottle if it happens again (sensor problem then!)

He said I shouldn't worry about the water so phew!

I just bunged in a couple of slugs of demineralised water when this happened to me (now at MAX when cold - was about halfway before). No more beeps, and not overheating - cost me 57p for the water, rather than stumping up for a new expansion tank (although that's only 12 quid or something, plus whatever the new coolant costs...)

Yeah, the dealer did say the bottle's about £9 and even suggested I could get it from the vw dealer to save a journey out of my way if I was happy to fit it.

I'll see what happens tomorrow morning
