Octavia TDI buying advise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am trying to find the right Octy TDI and would welcome some advise.

I have decided that it will ideally be an Elegance spec hatch or estate.

For the money I have I appear to have 2 options:

1. y2000 TDI with about 30k on the clock or

2. y2003 TDI with about 60k on the clock.

So, out of these two options, which would you go for and why?

I really want to find out what the pros and cons are for mileage over age.

Thanks in advance.

AJ.

the 2000 will be the pre-face lift model.... also more issues with a remap possibly.

I would also question why someone would have a diesel and only cover 30k in 7 years. My 2001 TDi (110) is fast approaching 120k

Better condition if that helps.

Otherwise I'd probably choose the younger facelift car, even with the extra miles, cos it should have been worked enough to avoid the VVT vane jamming issue, and should have had the cambelt changed. The older car is due a change in about a year from now, and I just can't see why anyone would choose a diesel for that low a mileage unles they really love the torquey engine.

2003 60k would be my choice. Most likely to have done less short journeys, and should of had a cambelt change already.

Thanks for the advise so far.

I have enquired about the 03 plate at 60k and the service and cambelt change needs to be done.

(In case anyone is interested it is advertised on a well known on-line auction site under 140163363010).

Does anyone have an idea what a 60k service plus cambelt change is likely to cost? Looking at another thread I guess I should get the water pump changed too?

I've kind of cooled on it, if the belt needs doing. Certainly you want to take that into account when pricing, cos it's several hundred pounds parts and labour, but only another 20 to 30 to add the water pump change.

Just had my 60k + cambelt done at the stealers*, and all-in cost was £595 if that's any help

*end of warranty, otherwise I'd have taken it to a well-known independent garage nearby! ;)
