New Cambelt

Featured Replies

Just having the cambelt done as we speak, paid £56 + VAT for the belt (continental from euro car parts)

plus £70 on labour!

also having a service done, i paid £15 for GTX oil, plus £35 on fuel/oil/air filter, plus £30 labour

so £220 all in!

RESULT

Good price, but...

Castrol GTX is completely the wrong oil to be putting in a Fabia vRS - it's OK in something like an MPi, but it's too viscous and short-lived to be sloshing around in a PD lump, I'm afraid. You sure you didn't mean Castrol Edge?

As said above i also dont think castrol GTX meets the Vag 505.01 needed for the pd lump.

Plus i would also be looking at replacing the tensioners and water pump as these are know to fail before the belt does

I echo the sentiments above. Really you should be looking to do the £30 waterpump whilst the cambelt is off the car. It's a weak link over the life of the car and it's failure "can" be quite catastrophic.

As long as the oil is 505.01 stuff, I feel no need to worry, but having never seen this oil for less than about £25, I worry about the £15 stuff that's been put in. I recommend Millers XFE-PD oil for the pd130 lump.

As everyone above has said - You must use an oil which meets specification VW 505 01. The following oils are approved to that specification (not the full list by any means):

BP Special Visco V 5W-40 (fully synthetic)

Castrol GTD 505 01 5W-40

DEA Ultec Diesel SAE 5W-40

Delphi Prestige Diesel Plus 5W-40 (synthetic-based)

Esso 505 01 5W-40

Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL PD SAE 5W-40 (fully synthetic)

Granville Topaz Diesel 5W-40 (semi-synthetic)

Madit 505 01

Migrol Special S-Plus

Millers XFE-PD SAE 5W-40 (semi-synthetic)

Motul 6100 5W-40

OMV syn com diesel

Q8 Formula Excel 5w40 (fully synthetic)

Shell Helix Diesel Plus VA 5W-40 (semi-synthetic)

VAG-branded 505 01 505 00 High Lubricity Engine Oil 5W-40 - G 052 167 A2

- (Part No: ZGB 115 QLB 00 462 - RRP £32.90 inc VAT for 5 litres)

Valvoline DuraBlend Diesel SAE 5W-40 (semi-synthetic)

Carlube 5W40 PD Triple R VW 505 01 full synthetic

Get the GTX drained ASAP, you shouldn't need to change the filter. The PD engines need a specific oil because there are very high loadings on the camshaft lobes due to the pressures involved in operating the valves AND the integral injection pump (one per cylinder, unlike Common Rail engines).

The other recommendations re tensioner, water pump etc also stand true.

A knackered engine will cost thousands (£2k to £3k) to repair / replace.

I'll echo those comments again..

You really do want the whole tensioner and belt kit not just the belt and the water pump at the same time is a good idea as it only costs £25.

I'd also go with the millers PD oils, similar price to the Edge, but you get 5L not 4L.

Make sure they change the tensioners as well. Like the other chaps have said Castrol GTX is the wrong oil for pumpe dusse engines, it needs to be fully synthetic 5w/40 that meets vw505.01 grade. If the water pump has done over 30000 miles change it as well pal, you buy cheap you buy twice!

Oil is being changed to edge oil today, cheers guys!

The tensioners were changed with the belt, it was the full kit, the water pump had already been done too!

normally im realy fussy about oil, nothing but motul motorsport oil goes in the BMW, my mistake i should have checked first i thought diesel's were diesel's! oops!
