Rattling Rear speaker in Octavia

Featured Replies

Has anyone experienced a rattly speaker in the rear of their Octavia? Its a weird rattling noise that started on saturday, goes off when the stereo is turned off and is not so bad with the bass turned down to -2, but then the CD sounds crap.

Had a look and nothing seems loose, my dad is getting annoyed with it so will take it into the dealer, just wondering if anyone else has had this.

By the way is the RS stero system any better than the standard?

I'd guess it's either resonance from the speaker shaking the

side shelf part, or the washers on the screws holding the

speaker in place are shaking. This can be fixed by either

tightening or loosening the offending screw, or sticking a big

lump of Blu-tak on it.

As a third thought, the rear speaker might just be cacked - I

got through about three of them in as many months.

Component-wise the system is the same in the vRS, but you'll

have carpet cups over the underside of the rear speakers, which

I've found I don't... :D

I have found that the rear speakers of my RS are definately uprated units to that fitted to my 2.0 SLX (physically the RS are heavier and have bigger magnets), agree with the carpet cover. Dont know if there are any differences with the fronts as I have never looked. Also remember the 2.0 is a pre facelift model but assume they are the same in teh elagance that iit was replaced by. L&K's should be the same as the RS as the brochures state these are uprated over the other models.

Not an Octavia, but I had a buzzing noise eminating from one of my rear speakers. (It turned out to be a faulty speaker and was replaced under warranty.)

I also use a layer of Dynamat between the speaker and its mounting. I have used a similar method for the other speakers and tweeters. I find this stops the trim rattling and improves sound quality.

Didn't the pre-facelift Octavia's generally come with a tape

player and less than 8 speakers? Looking on the Skoda

website it looks like it's only the Classic that doesn't come with

the Symphony and 8 speakers...

Dynamat's great stuff, shame about the cost though... :(

SLX's from about nov1999 MY2000 came with climate control and Grundig single cd 8 speaker set up - at the same time the 1.8 20v non turbo engine was dropped and replaced by the 2.0 8v unit the 1.8T 150bhp unit was also available costing IIRC about

My previous 2000 W Reg TDI SLX had 8 speakers and a single slot Grundig cd and at the time was the top of the range (cost

I know the stuff you mean from B&Q.

I've used this stuff on a previous car, but found that it is nowhere near as flexible as Dynamat.

I had to heat it first with a hair dryer to make it flexible enough to use.

It kept falling off too, whereas Dynamat doesnt.

You can buy enough Dynamat for an 8 speaker setup for around

It's some kind of roofing material from B&Q, isn't it?

I found the best solution for sound insulation was Dynomat

on the panels and (don't laugh) good ol' Pink Panther loft

insulation under the boot and floor carpets. Really quietens

a car down...

Using 200mm (8") thickness to comply with Building Regulations by any chance, or wasn't there quite enough room under the pedals and seats? thinks.gif

C'mon, Rob, pull the other one or post some pics showing the stuff sticking out around the doors and rear hatch. And do you use it under the bonnet as well to quieten the engine?

Time to soundproof the dog........dog.gif

Well, no, not 8" stuff as common sense should tell you that it

wouldn't work :p

I haven't done it on my Octavia as most of it's noise comes from

it's unaerodynamic shape. I did it with my Astra though, as most

of the noise came from the engine rumble.

Rob.

Used a simliar method on my previous Gallic tin box (Peugeot 205)

I refrained from the pink stuff and used more traditional sound proofing felt.

I did manage to get the doors to shut with a satisfying "thunk" after doing this. Before it was more of a "clang" :D

I guess you probably didn't end up sweating so much in summer

then either! :D

Hi All

Talking about the prices that the SLXi was sold at when it came out , I was chatting to a salesman at my dealer last saturday (only went in coz i saw that they had registered their Corida red vRS as a demo!) and got talking about my old car which was a 99V 1.8T slxi in met silver , he said that did I know that car was around

FabiaTDI : Sounds like a similar problem, I'm going to have a poke around this weekend and if it continues my dad will take it to the dealer next week.

Do all you RS/ Octavia Hatchback owners find when its been raining loads of water runs into the boot when you open the hatch:eek: Often the speakers get wet...this can't be good:confused:

With regarding to water drippage, I find that it only goes onto

the side shelves, and not into the speakers.

It probably isn't good if water is going on them, but I think

they're nylon or something so that in itself shouldn't do all that

much harm. They don't stand up to loud volumes though - this

is what is suspected to have killed off mine...

Yeah me too generally but our drive is on a steep slope so this makes it drip further forward.

Ah this could be the problem then... Too much Genesis and Pink Floyd at loud volumes (doesn't mention this to the dealer;) )

They never seemed that bothered about how mine had gone -

one of the technicians changing one did point out that I was

probably pushing mine to their limits, and suggested upgrading

them. :D

I never investigated any of my "farting" speakers though, so

I couldn't tell you what to look for with them unfortunately...
