Oh wow, a girly greasemonkey. My kind of woman - one who washes car parts in the dishwasher and engine parts in the sink :P

Please Nick, I wash my filter in the washing machine does that make me a girly greasemonkey?

Welcome to the forum, you maybe see you at Maidstone tonight!

 So it might

I wish I had just said "girl" now instead of "girly".

Em, which filter? If it's a paper one, it won't do it any good at all. If it's an oiled cotton one, does the dirt come out? Has it made the wire mesh go rusty at all? Mine did (and that wasn't even washed in the machine :( )

hi. and welcome to briskoda...

looks like this will be a long thread. ;)

Thats not what you said last night dahlink..... :D

Besides, someone's got to keep you in order... yer a right hooligan when you get started.... lol

I figure C20LET is old hat now... no matter ow you rebuild it, its an old engine, and finding one that has been cared for is no easy matter! Plus my car is a facelift and has some of the wiring needed for a fly-by-wire Z engine... would be better if I currently had the Z18XE, but I've got the intermediary X18XE1... pain in the ***. Anyways, as far as I see it, Z20LET is the way forward, a newer engine, already some mods out for it, and with the Astra VXR now on the market, the mods are only going to get better and better. First on the list of parts to get are an organic clutch, a forge intercooler and a VXR fuel rail with injectors. ECU has been mapped (apparently) and it has a claimed 260bhp... although I would beg to differ considering it had just the crappy standard 2.0 F18 gearbox and standard driveshafts.... so it MAY have got over 200 brake, but with standard calipers and 288mm discs... I doubt it would have stopped. lol....

Got my work cut out, and a lot to do, but by show season next year, I shall have my first RR and see what I can't get out of her without getting silly with the internals of the block :D

christ... sorry for boring you!

you did oil it after right??

The lubricant filter oil should prevent oxidisation of the mesh in the filter and help dirt stick... so it shouldn't go rusty :(

K&N do decent filter cleaning kits - may be worth getting one... I know that some detergents are too strong for the filters too.

Hi and welcome,

smart move posting the piccies, now you'll avoid the otherwise unaviodable question from Briskoda's smart-*sses...

Once again I'm baffled by web community acronyms: WAG? Who's wagging who (or what)?;)

Aye... "Wives & Girlfriends".... I actually hate the term... I can stand up for myself on most forums... but technically I have no other reason to join this forum other than the fact my OH is on here... so it officially makes me a WAG.... I do like some of the skodas he gets to come home in though - shame he won't let me drive them!

Hiya GR. I'm afraid I loath V@*xh@11s in general, and V*ctr@s in particular. I know they're dymamically rubbish, cos I've driven one pretty much back to back with an Octy (2.2 petrol V*ctr@ of some sort vs Ambiante TDi) and despite the difference in power the Octy still won out by being faster on the twisty bits!

Another mechaniccy type is always welcome, and if you want ideas with mods, you're welcome to ask.

Of course, all that said, a good mesh or mesh re-enforced cotton or foam filter should be made with stainless steel mesh anyway.

christ... sorry for boring you!

Not at all zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ;)

Hey, way to go - 20 or so posts in 2 hours :D

Thanks for the welcome....

I think its different strokes for different folks to be honest. If we all liked the same thing then it would be a REALLY boring world would it not.

I do love my vectra, but I also love other cars out there. It is a mass produced repmobile... but its all mine, and no doubt if everyone's car looked like mine, I'd be outta there like a shot... ;)

Might have to take you up on the ideas for mods - once the Z20LET is in. The X18XE1 is pretty much stuffed as far as mods go... they seem to work better the less mods they have - hence I have done the 4 pipe mod, put an airfilter in there, remus centre pipe, blanked off the EGR and thats about it. And I STILL only get 320 miles to a full tank of fuel. lol.

Fair comment...

was that the later vectra C though? as i would agree the vectra c is crap! i'd bet my bottom teeth i mark 1 early octavia couldnt keep up with my 1998 vectra B ;)

Aaaaw, that's unkind... but cheer up, lots of mod experts/enthusiasts here, maybe they have some useful hints on necessary readjustment/tuning:D

I will admit to having washed it not in the Green detergent but in WUL or similar. (have you seen the stupid little bottle of stuff they give you in the cleaning kit? :D) However I think what actually made it go rusty was my homebrewed air intake from the front air dam, too close to the road, which kept it in a rather too permanently moist condition.

It was oiled, with the proper oil, but not excessively, since I didn't want to go the other way and wreck my MAF.

As Ken says, if the mesh was stainless, no problem. I actually think it's probably still usable, despite being a bit stained with the rust, but for safety's sake it's now back in a box in the garage.

you really do know your stuff and looks like you have put a lot of research into hope all goes well start a little project journel and keep us posted i like vauxhalls always have

you checked regal motorsport out they do alot of good packages for the Z20LET engine they can do the VXR turbo and map for i think something like £750

Thats fair enough... although I'm not too sure its good to have THAT much water going up the intake ;) ;)

I don't think it was ever THAT much water, but I did used to find the odd leaves, etc, in there. May just have been one rainy day that got it wet, but then it didn't dry out for a while....

If I'd kept the car, I would probably have done some mods to the mod and made it harder for it to ingest water.

Welcome along, were your brought up around cars then? my daughter knows more about cars than my brother does (who incidently probably know less about cars to a blade of grass ). also i reckon you will soon get a skoda when you realise how much better they are (this is coming from another ex vauxhall owner x3). ;)

Regal put this engine into a vectra in the first place... with the help of the ZLET guru, and Spats, I removed it... to be fair, I wasn't that impressed. EVERYTHING had been tightened FT with an impact wrench.... and it was a messy job. So I don't think I will be using them for too much, but I do have Track'N'Road on my side in Essex who will do anything they can to help me :)

Got a good bunch helping me out down here I think :) I'll start a project journal as soon as work begins... for now just a couple of pics of bits to wet my appetite :D
