1.4 AUA Auto 2001 Engine cut out

Featured Replies

Driving at motorway speed yesterday the engine cut out and rev counter dropped to zero.

This lasted for less than a second and then engine ran as normal and rev counter bounced back to previous reading.

Grateful of any thoughts!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi, I'm the guy you asked if I ever got anywhere with this cutting out..

To be honest.. No, I told my mechanic who said if it happened again to try and take more notice of whats on and off... but truth is it never happened again and it's been about 6 or 7 months now.

My Mechanics first thought was a faulty relay, he infomred me of a VW trasporter bus that another customer had (poor guy had no legs so if it stopped, he was stuck).. anyways.. My guy borrowed it and had it for a couple of months before the fault happened again and he could trace it.

Unless it's happening regularly then the relays sound like a good strting point.. if it's only happened once? might nenver happen again.. if its a 2nd, 3rd time over 6 months or something then i dunno i'm afraid.

Rob.

Had a 1.4 MPi in the other week, a non starter, scanned it no faults found. Did an output test on the fuel pump relay it did not make a noise (this was all in the customers' driveway). Towed it back and went to move it later, it fired up as if nothing was wrong, did another output test an the relay was making the necessary noises. Replaced the relay and we haven't seen it since.

You could try cleaning the throttle body and log the coolant temperature sensor readings from cold to normal temperature. Had a 16V with similar symptoms, the the temperature readings were all within parameters a log revealed that one reading would be 80 degrees and the next a fraction of a second later would be 11 degrees. This would affect the fuelling resulting in too a rich mixture to burn.

Thanks for the thoughts.

The ECT sensor was replaced about a year ago.

I understand what you are saying but I can't make the suggestion fit with the fact the rev counter went to zero at the same time.

The whole event was so quick that I wondered if I'd imagined it.

My wife says this also happened when she was driving the car, same conditions, motorway speed. So there have been two events now.

I'm suspicious of the crank sensor, i.e. no output would send the rev counter to zero and stop ignition. But it could equally be almost any other electrical glitch.

I would just change the crank sensor, but I can't even see it!

I know my eyesight is begining to fail but a it seems it would be a lot of work to change it on the off chance.

Don't know if Relay 109 could cause this issue, but it has been known to fail on many VAG cars and cause the engine to cut out, although I'm not sure if they will restart straight away afterwards. These cost about £20 for a new version and the dealers usually have them in stock. Probably easier to change a relay than a crank position sensor if this is a possible fault.

Thanks, but there is no relay 109 on the Fabia.
