Drive of a Fabia 2 1.2 htp

Featured Replies

Ok, so I had a drive of one of these and quite frankly, what a horrible little car.:thumbdwn:

The thing is so underpowered, I think the only way the other cars on the road could have pulled away from me quicker would have been if I was in reverse.

The body roll is shocking and cornering quite frankly crap. I really thought they might have moved on from the MK I Fabia, but it appears not.

The trim, well it is a bit hard, but the quality seems fair for a car in this class.

I mean I wasn't expecting a lot from this car, but the last generation fiesta 1.25 style is nicer and the corsa had it licked.

I guess Skoda have gone after the older motorist again with this Fabia. When I see the old MK I, even the VRS, they tend to be driven by the more senior persons in society, so I guess that is the new cars intended market, which is just a shame.

I really can't see what they could do to this to make a VRS anything particularly special at an affordable price.

fair comments, but if you think its underpowered try driving a pug or citroen 1.1 or 1.4 petrol!!

compared to those cars the 1.2 is lightning quick!! :)

did you test the 60bhp or the 70bhp BTW? i did have the 1.2 70bhp for a few weeks and yes its no speed racer but i used it everyday and thought it was quite fun, loved the engine note too :D. didnt think the body roll was too bad considering its higher and roomier than a feista. took my missus, her mum, me and loads of luggage back from luton airport without a issue and i got a decent mpg too.

In a similar vein, the dash on the Roomster I had as a courtesy car seemed very plasticky and a bit cheap (Fiat-ish, to be honest!) - I know it wasn't a design classic on the Fabia mk1, but at least it didn't feel especially low-rent!

The 85bhp 1.4 it had seemed pretty nippy, though, despite having barely half the horsepowers of my vRS - managed to light up the front tyres off the lights a couple of times! :D

It was a fabia 2, so I guess must have been the 70, I wasn't really asking too many questions as it was a friends fathers work car. I got taken quite cleanly by a 1.1L pug 106, although I will admit the 106 is a much lighter car.

I'll admit i wasn't driving granny style in the car, but I didn't feel that the car was stable enough to be able to throw it around should I have wished to.

Does the suspension differ across the range, or is the whole range on the super soft "comfort" suspension.

I could not disagree with you more! We bought a Fabia 2 70bhp petrol six weeks ago and find it refined, economical and not in any way as slow as you suggest. Do you drive a Porche or something? Your ageist comments are not what this excellent forum is about.

dunno but i had fun showing up a few numpties in small cars round town, and my 1.9tdi could eat many faster cars. found the suspension soft but not soft enough to stop me having fun round corners :D guess we all have different styles. i normally drive a vectra remember, so im probably less picky lol!

I totally agree with this comment, and that's why i ordered this version, and will be picking it up tomorrow :)

Agree with you too, I have the MK1 1.2 HTP 64 bhp, you will find especially on this forum you will get comments like this when some drives a smaller capacity engine. I would have another one - they are excellent engines.

No an Octy TDI.

I don't see how anything I said was remotely ageist. I merely pointed out that it was my opinion that skoda had targeted the older motorist again. The MK I Fabia is predominately driven by older people, that is just something I have observed in my daily drives.

The car might be refined compared to what you are used to, but I have to say I didn't feel it was.

People have opinions, they differ, that is what this forum is about along with providing helpful advice. Feel free to get off your soap box any time soon!

Just because i don't like the car you have bought doesn't mean my opinion is invalid, I could have been a lot harsher based on how much I disliked being in it.

The MK I being much lower than the MK II, is obviously such a perfect comparison.

My review was,I thought, reasonably balanced bearing in mind I didn't just come in and slag the car. Things i stated are my opinion, I am allowed one, as is everybody.

I'm really glad you love your 1.2HTP's, I wouldn't ever buy one, especially not in the fabia 2.

I'm sure some of the TFSI octy guys don't like how my engine is, they are allowed that opinion so "comments" are opinions. Live with them, the internet is full of the things.

Sorry wasn't meaning to have a go at you personally there will be always two camps when it comes to smaller engines, you'll find people will either like them or hate them, guess its a question of driving styles. Interesting comments about the body roll - suppose now it is higher would expect handling to be not so good

That's ok, the internet is a great place to be able to misinterpret the meaning of what people say :)

Just to point out that the mk 2 fabia actually weighs less than the mk 1 despite being bigger, so combined with the extra few bhp the revised 1.2 engine has, it should be quicker.

Having driven both mk 1 and mk 2 fabia's with the 12v version i think they are great little cars , and the only time i really noticed a lack of power in comparison with my 1.4 tdi was when going up hill, don't know what it would be like with a full load though.

Fair point cheesemonkhai. I perhaps misinterpreted your meaning regarding 'older people'. I now accept you were not being ageist.

I am still a little puzzled at how strongly you disliked the 1.2. But you're right - we are all allowed our opinions!

My Daughter has a 1.2 as well so have driven that and another one from the garage ...although neither were a ball of fire (I normally drive a pd 130 Superb) they did their job sounded great and to be honest kept/keep up with todays traffic well and are great around town.....the mpg is quite good and it will hold the speed limit easily on the motorway....cornring ....ummm it does lean a bit but again is still acceptable and safe even when pushed quite hard (I had a demonstrator all to my self ) and it didn't do anything I wasn't expecting.

If taken for what it is, a small car with good mpg and a fair amount of interior space it isn't bad at all

too many old people on here... bring back the mk1 and **** invasion....

hands up for compulsory retests @ 50 which include lapping the "ring" in Forza with all assists off.. get these old fogeys off the road.

Hand up... if my final drive and probably final action ever is around the ring, I'm up for it. A good way to go :D

Sounds like a pretty fair review to me - the Mk1 used to roll for England under anything more than gentle cornering which made making progress quite interesting. I've not driven the Mk2 but I had a Mk1 1.2-12v a few times as a courtesy car and the engine was a bit lack lustre in that so I opted to use the backroad country lanes rather than the motorway.

May be down to driving style or expectations I guess - I love the 1.0-16v Micra I get as a courtesy car now :D

Chris

Drove the new 1.2 Corsa yesterday. Now that is quite nippy :D
