Your opinion please

Featured Replies

Hi,

I will be heading off to W. Yorkshire from London in the next few days and I was thinking of having my cambelt/water pump replaced whilst I'm there as it's about £80 cheaper than the lowest quote I have been given around the M25.

My question is, what are the chances of the cambelt needing readjustment after some mileage, or is it advisable to have this sort of job done locally?

As I will be covering about 500miles, I really don't fancy doing it again if there is a high chance of returning for readjustments or whatever.

Please what's your opinion.

Many thanks

No need to adjust once fitted, the tensioner is replaced at the same time the belt/tensioner kit is about £100. If you get it done early in your visit, then you'll be able to check that nothing else is loose, lost etc before heading south.

Go for it.

Thanks V, but it's likely I will be fitting it in on my way back South.

Shouldn't be a problem TBH, especially as the works going to be done at a dealer (I presume?) You hear the odd horror story, but it's incredibly rare, and stopping to check after n days wouldn't have made any difference AIUI...

I guess you'll have heard the advice regarding getting your waterpump done at the same time?

You will be fine as long as you use a reputable place. I would use genuine parts and have the water pump done at the same time if it was me.

IMHO, If it was normal for tension to be lost, you would end up with a lot of broken engines where the belt went slack and the valves and other bits collided.
