Has anybody managed to sell a car on this forum recently

Thanks for the message.

ps just had an email from soneone who's been to see a number of Skuds and had to admit they were 'shoddy'. That's maybe what makes the difference. Book price is one thing, but it's only a guide. It's not the law and not set in concrete. If someone sees the value in a car - then the 'book' price is just that - a price in a book.

But the point is,you keep saying you have had no serious interest, and if the car is in the condition you say,it can only be the price that is stopping it sell, and that's not necesarily down to "book price",it is down to what other cars are advertised for and selling, and they can't all be rough!!

I understood the point, honest. The thing is a Buyer always thinks 'book' price. A Seller always thinks 'the book is not everything'.

If it sells it'll go for what it's worth - what it's worth is what someone is willing to pay.

On a forecourt it would have sold by now because it can be seen and driven.

On the Internet people make judgements based on digi pics and descriptive words. Sometimes we can advertise poorly and not get a sale.

Tomorrow will tell !!

cheers Chris

A funny thing - ebay auction ended - Autotrader ended - no sale. Then I get a call out of the blue from a genuine sounding guy who says he wants to buy - will keep you posted!!

As Winston Churchill said, "Never, never, never - give up!"

I had sucess in seling my Fabia vRS on the forum earlier this year, also had it on eBay - got hundreds of views but no solid interest.

The target audience on Briskoda isn't going to reach the people who might want a Skoda, but is more aimed at the people who know what their looking for.

Anyone researching prior to their Skoda purchase, or indeed those who want to upgrade from one Skoda to another are the folk most likely to make a purchase through the forum.

In particular if the car is modified, then selling on here should be more sucessful than going to a dealer or using autotrader and the like.

As someone else said, being realistic with the price is the important bit - buyers have to have a reason to take the risk in buying privately rather than going to a dealer.

Good luck with the sale!! Hope it works out good :)

I have just had to sign up to view whats for sale. Looking for a fab RS as my 250bhp Beetle is killing me on petrol! Damn jabbasport!

My black Fabia vrs nov2005plate is about to go up for sale so ill be trying the forum for my first port of call. seems like its hit and miss with selling on here ebay etc etc.

Ebay is a strange animal - you get over a 1000 views. You get 50 watchers. You get 10 bids all around half the value you expect. Then nobody bids in the last moments.

My honest opinion is that ebayers consist largely of those folk who like walking around car boot sales, auto jumbles etc and expect to get a steal or their cash stays in their pockets.

I only put the Skud on there as I was desperate for space. It's a thing I won't do again - it's 99% a waste of time and money if you expect a true value sale.

The funny thing is - as soon as the auction ended I started getting the calls! Huh?

I'll know by 5p.m. today if it's gone.

Keep you posted.

BTW - if anyone puts their vRS Octavia on Autotrader don't do what I did and list it as some sort of SLXi or whatever category was offered to me. Put people off I found out later.

PS did go for 5250!!

I recently walked into a showroom and got chatting to the salesman, who keen to do a deal and he said he would see what my car was worth with a few underwriters. It’s done 25K on a March 06 reg and the spec is below in my sig. It also has a Dension Gatway 300 fitted (USB + ipod link that works form the steering wheel controls and also keeps the 6 CD player working) as well as a boot liner and front flaps etc. It only books at £11,700 (inc mileage adjustment) but when he rang round to see if the extra £3K of spec helped much (I figured about 10%) the best bid he got from a dealer was £11K.

I guess the used market is very slow and that Octys aren’t reaching anything like book:(

Well, drivethedeal are offering around £4.5K off a 123D SE BMW……weeeeeeeeeeeeeee:eek::)

In response to Ebay.i have previously sold 3 cars a van and had my minibus on there.

The cars have been a modified Smart Fourtwo(£4600,which was virtually what i paid for the car and the cost of most of the mods, and i ran it for 10 months),a Golf GT TDI150(£10,200,when i had only paid £9500 8 months previously, but it was low mileage and had a massive spec including leather etc) and a Lotus Elise(£8600,which is what i had paid for it 6 weeks earlier, but i lost the £400 i had spent on the clutch),all have been listed as with all my auctions with a £1 start and no reserve, and all have gone on to make what i wanted, and in the case of the Golf, more than i had paid for it 8 months previously.

In my experience with Ebay, you always get a good response and if you let the bidders decide what it is worth,it tends to make as near as dammit "market value",and that is the best anyone can expect.

As for Autotrader,i have always sold any cars i have had on there within 2 weeks of advertising, because i except what a lot of people don't,and if i have no calls/interest(genuine),then i will reduce it until i get calls and interest.I had a modified Leon Cupra R last year that would not sell at the £12,795ono i was advertising it at,and as long as i got circa £12k for it i was happy,so i reduced it to £12,195ono,sold it straight away for £12,150!!

Just be realistic and be open to listening to genuine offers.

Some fair points but..........

Ebay got me 50 watchers and 10 bids of up to 3600. As soon as ebay ended I got a call from a nice couple who offered 5250 and bought it? So clearly my car was worth 5250 (my reserve) and clearly none of the 1100 or so viewers and watchers bid anywhere near that. So I still reckon it's a funny old place. Having said that it's prob the best auction site out there.

If I was dealing as such I would 'buy right' and 'sell right' but as this was my own car that had depreciated from 16100 to 5250 in 5 years I suppose I was keen to get best possible price.

Darn that 'market price' thing!!

I must say I'm having a really tough time selling my Fabia vRS at the moment. The day I posted it on here a forum member offered me £6800 for it. I think I put it down at about £7700 which was way too high but I'd based it on a couple of cars I'd seen on autotrader. Unfortunately I rejected the offer only to realise that it was a decent offer when I check the valuations for the car!

Unforunately since then I haven't had any offers about £6000! According to whatcar and glass's its worth about £6650 at private sale so I'm surprised I havent had any offers around £6500. Its in very good condition, fsh, cruise control, metallic paint, 4 months remaining warraty, 2004 model with 48500 miles.

Hopefully something will come up soon that is at least somewhere close to the actual value of the car!

What would people think of as a genuine offer? I mean, I know the original 6800 was a genuine offer in hind site but should I just hang on for something to come up or sell it for way below the expected value?

advertising on autotrader isn't cheap!

One of the contributory factors is this; there are just too many second hand cars in the UK!

Have you ever said to yourself 'how do used car ever keep their prices seeing as there are a million 2nd hand cars on every UK high street and back road garage'?

OK a little over statement but it's the truth - loads of cars for people to choose from.

Hope it goes well - never give up. There's a saying in the trade I've heard that goes - 'your first offer is usually your best offer' has a ring of truth eh?

You should try just putting it on the website on Autotrader,as it only costs £16.99 for 2 weeks advertising, and imo is the best option.

I run 3 vehicles at a time normally,so usually have one up for sale and am always looking for another car,and whenever i have advertised on the A/T website have had a good response and have always sold my cars within the 2 week period........................for the price it has to be worth a try!!

Just remember,to sell yours or at least make it stand out among all the other ads, price it a bit lower than the equivelent cheapest car(even by £100)and be prepared to listen to anyone making a genuine offer.................if you get lots of interest, you can afford to hang out for your prefered price, but if you have little interest and then someone makes an offer, you have to be realistic, and again, imho,it's getting close to christmas,so people tend not to be buying cars, and won't until February normally,so if you want to sell in the next 3 months you need to get a move on:thumbup:

I have had quite a lot of interest in the car over the last week but all offers have been several hundred pounds less than I have been offered for it at trade in which seems weird. I wonder why people think I'd be likely to accept less money for more work! Still, dont blame them for trying really!
