Tyre and tracking problems

Featured Replies

Hi, time for my first thread on here

I went to get some new tyres for octy sport fsi at weekend to be told by fitter that i must have some kind of major prob with tracking or something because front tyres were threadbare. i'd never noticed because the wear was on the inside edge but not on the usual contact area with the road. The rest of the tread had worn equally.

I decided to get all four corners tracked professionally to be told front wheels were a mile out and rear slightly out. They said tracking would not of caused the wear in the said area. I was supprised at the results as octy only 17 months old and never been curbed. Tyres were dunlop sp sports 2000 225 45 17 replaced with dunlop sp sport 9000

Can anyone help with what the cause of the wear would be and why the tracking would be so far out. Thanks

There was a known issue with the rear not been set at its optimum. Nothing as far as I know on the front though. What pressures are you running and how often do you check them?

Hi, around 32psi and check monthly

My Dunlops wore out the same way. They also cracked along the grooves so I binned them and bought Vredesteins. Two years later they are wearing perfectly evenly. I blame the tyres.

my dunlops also di teh same too, worn on inner edge on front tyres and cracked grooves. replaced with goodyear f1 gsd3's and 4 wheel track and theyve been fine since as far as i know. must have a check of the inner tyre thinking about it

The Dunlops on my old Octy II had about 17k on them. They had also worn very badly on the inner edge and I'm starting to think they were the cause of what we thought was a wheel bearing failure.

mine also had the front drivers bearing replaced at about 18,000 miles as it was thoroughly buggered.

I was astonished to discover the rear tyres on my wife's 54 plate Octy Elegance were also totally shagged on the inside rears  whilst I was checking the fronts and decided to get them replace as they dropped below 3 mm

I got all 4 tyres replaced and the alignment checked/adjusted -- which showed the toe adjustment was way out on the rears, fronts were OK; just within tolerance.

Now, this would have been the case straight out of the factory, and am now considering approaching the dealer, because there's no way that the rears should have required replacing otherwise, nor the extra expense of having the tracking adjusted (check was free).

There is no history of hit curbs (and that would generally only knock it out on one side -- both were equally bad.) or any other accidents etc. anyhow.

I had always thought her car felt a bit unstable and had a tendency to feel 'wobbly' at the rear, even in a straight line, but it was difficult to judge, because my own car is so different to drive. Wifey also had a bit of a scare one night, saying she nearly swapped ends on a local lane -- at the time I put it down to potentially icy conditions, she was so shook up, she didn't really take much in about the road conditions, but it was a cold night... I just never put 2+2 together till now! :(

After the alignment, the car is a completely different beast to drive, and I would even say handles very well for a diesel tug - I'm now not afraid of throwing it more into some of the corners that I enjoy so much in my '8 ;-)

So -- has this been a common 'fault' with Skodas, anybody else saught recompense from the dealer (I assume a 'warranty' issue?).

Same trouble with mine. The car has been to dealer a couple of times with no problems found. They now want £80 for a laser wheel set up.

Ive let Kwik **** do the tracking (which they said was out) and the wear seems to have slowed down a little.

Been through 2 sets of front tyres in 26000 miles and now need other pair:mad:

Mine are Dunlop Sports and at the first service, only 17000 miles in two years, the dealer told me the tires were wearing badly and that perhaps I should get a full alignment check.

I will get Christmas out of the way and then perhaps get rid of these Dunlops, never found Dunlops any good over my many years of driving. Goodyear always seem to be good as were Continental and Pirelli. Not sure what to put on this time I long ago stopped haring around so really want quiet, good wear and safe.
