Why do cars that you dream of disapoint you ....

Featured Replies

A good fews years ago I had a brand new 51 reg clio 1.2 16v and I always wanted the 172 as an upgrade but funds would'nt allow. Ever since its been one of them cars that I wanted at some point, even just to try it out. But at lunchtime today, a colleege took me out in his and tried his hardest to impress me on the roads near work but tbh, I wasn't anything like I thought it would be...

His is actually 182 so being smaller and lighter than my vrs estate, I exppected it to be faster, but even he agreed that is was a fair bit slower:eek:

I dont mean any offence to any owners of them here, but are the mk vrs's really faster in standard form???

Depends on the type of roads and the competencies of the driver. Remember that the 182 lacks the turbo surge the Octavia has, but I think you get a different perception of speed from the passenger seat so you want to ask him if you can drive it to see how it compares from the driver's seat..... :D

Funny you should say that about Renaults. I had exactly the same experience with the 1.2 16V Clio. Drove a hire car (!) with less than 6000 on the clock, really impressed with the oomph and how the front end kept anchored to the ground at speed.

Tried one from a showroom with 15,000 showing, different as chalk and cheese.

So often, and with so many things, you read up, you want, you build yourself up to getting it and then finally buy it - and are disappointed.

Plus, law of diminishing returns comes into it.

What do you mean:confused:

like your 1st ride i suppose

:-)

What do you mean:confused:

Spend £100 on upgrading something (say).

Yeah - get quite a result.

Spend another £100 - disappointment cos the upgrade makes nowhere near the same difference.

cars - 10k will get you a good un.

Is a 20k car twice as good - nah.

Is a 40k one 4 times as good......

Never meet your heroes, leave them as dreams...

Edit: That said, the Clio 182 on a nice bendy road (and probably in a straight line) will beat anything that Skoda build unless the driver isn't up to scratch.

Have to say, having wanted a Porsche 911 for best part of 20 years, I've not been disappointed by the one I bought....

It may not be that much quicker than my Octavia, but it's certainly an experience :)

I'm just hoping I have the same experience when I get a Ur-quattro that I've wanted since I was 8...

I drove a 182 recently, and was disappointed, until the owner mentioned that it WASN'T a diesel, and if I revved it over 4k, it might go better.

That sorted the problem! Compared to my 2 ton diesel heap, it felt like a turbcharged roller skate on speed. Quite fun......

I always dreamt of having a go in metro 6R4 when i was younger.......then got older and dream was realised!.....dissapointed?......oh bejaysus i think not :)

K:)

I used to think that I'd like a 911, but had a 24-hour test drive in a C4S and thought it a huge letdown. If it had been 20k I'd still have thought it a bit ropey.

Hope my new red RS4 lives up to expectations when i win the Lottery

if your dream cars dont meet expectations... then you prob were not dreaming enough. A clio 172/182 is not a dream.

Its more like one those cars you always think ''yeah, thats nice. Bet their nice to drive''. I do have a very long wish list though......

Aye. I dream of a Jag Mk2, a Citroën DS, a Studebaker Hawk or a Saab 96 850cc two-stroke (the model that Erik Carlsson drove in the RAC rally in the early 60's.

But cost for spare parts and service will be a great disappointmen (or disaster). So it will continue to be dreams...

I found the same let down when I drove a Ferrari F355, it looks lovely, the specs are impressive, but what a bugger to drive. Not as much fun as I thought it would be.

Just like wimmin, Girls Aloud, Mutya, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss you want em, then you get em and they all not as hot as they are made out to be....................

Hang on its the doorbell, probably that Rod Stewarts missus come round for some more ChaCha lessons......AGAIN!

Told from first hand experience? In which case I must confess that I'm a weeeee bit envious

have to agree.

Lusted after a a friends dad's 5 series before I got the Octy years ago.

When I finally got to drive it, it seemed a tad disconnected/not as direct.

Is that a trait of RWD, because I note the same sensation in my old mans 3 series.

I'd still love to drive a DeLorean though. It can handle like the ISS for all I care. Still looks great.
