Generally happy newbie - Questions

Featured Replies

I've been a memeber for a while now but never felt the need to speak up, but now i feel is the time!! I've had Boris ( 2004 Black Magic ) now for 3 months or so & on the whole i've been very happy with him

Loving the perfomance, wouldn't mind it being abit less ON OFF ON OFF ON though

Really like the styling, apart from some new wheels & 50mm lowerage i wouldn't alter anything.

Buzzing along and seeing another Furby normally ends with a nod or a flash of the headlights ... you guys are great!!

However i just have a few concerns & questions that i've tried searching for within the forum but can't seem to find anything ( Sorry if i'm being blind )

1. When i do feel the need for some speed, would it be wise to wait until 2500rpm before i really put foot to floor, as i heard i could be damaging something? :(

2. After having the climate thingy jammed over as hot as it would go, i waited till i was 15mins down the A1 & felt the 2 right vents to find it was coming out not even warm but the 2 left vents were boiling hot!! ... Why is this?

3. Has no one spotted me zooming around? I'm not sure what the deal is with numberplates on here but mines PAZ 5**. ..Normally seen in Brighton town centre ( Work ) Medway towns in Kent ( Family ) Leeds ( Friends )

I hope someone can help a little with any of the above, it would be much appreciated as i love my little Skoda & its followers!

Hi Danger

Foot to floor is fine at any time as long as the gear isn't too high i.e. if you boot it from low down in a high gear then you'll feel a vibration - this is from the DMF (Dual-Mass Flywheel, flywheel 'in two sections' held together by very strong springs thus designed to damp out a lot of the diesel vibrations). Persistent use of this 'technique' could damage the DMF as it will basically be shaking itself to bits.

So, booting it at 35mph, say, in 4th is not a good idea. 50 to 60 mph would be fine.

At 35 mph dropping down to 3rd is less harsh on the DMF when needing to press on.

Hi

Yes use the gears as anonymouse has said

This will make the clutch last longer too as well as the DMF

Welcome and yes the car does look good oops sorry boris :D

Sarah

Welcome to the fabia section mate, glad you are enjoying the car as anonymouse has said.

Boris looks cracking mate.

David

Welcome :)

Will keep an eye out for you :)

I picked up my Fabia TDi yesterday, very happy so far. Pulls well for me, speeds feel slower than when I was in clio.

Pretty much the best economical/performance trade off I could have gotten for my age (18) - insurance etc..

One question I have though is, at what revs am I starting to labour the engine?

One question I have though is, at what revs am I starting to labour the engine?

Put it in 4th at 30mph and try to accelerate - not too hard.

Feel it 'chugging' - it's labouring.

Drop it into 3rd at 30mph and accelerate gently - no 'chugging'.

Basically you'll feel when it is labouring, at whatever speed, so drop down a gear.

Yer, been driving about today.

In my old clio 1.2, 30 was fine in 4th. I quickly realised that in the Fabia that changing at 40 was better.

Minimum speed for 5th? I will listen for chugging next time more closely, but in the mean time I wouldn't mind knowing.

I'm particular like that sometimes :P

Yup, Fabia doesn't like 30mph and 4th gear on anything but the lightest of throttle (and downhill gradients).

Re 5th gear - can't remebemr off top of my head - but again, say you chose 50mph and accelerated hard and it was also up an incline, then the engine will probably labour until it picks up speed.

A case of trying things out - that and combined with the feel through 'seat of pants' etc will let you know when to drop down a gear.

Ahh ok thanks.

Inclines, I tend to drop it a cog or 2 anyway and boot it :P
