How long do you wait in the morning before driving of

Featured Replies

A while ago I asked this and the concensus was get in and drive - But I didnt understnd exactly why.

Does this not damage your engine? What gets affcted if you wait / dont wait on a cold morning

not sure on damage caused etc (if any) but i generally start up and quickly clear any ice etc (2-3 mins max) then just drive off

All modern engines will be ok just starting and driving off, just dont cane it till its up to temp

If it's a diesel, wait for the glow plug light to go off first before you start up.

turn key

put seatbelt on

start engine

select approirate CD

GO GO GO!!!

Put key in, part turn, wait for glow plug symbol to go off and start up engine.

If i'm de-icing i'll leave the engine running while I clear the windows as it takes the chill off the leather :)

Turn key. Leave for 10 seconds till oil goes round. Then off we go, not going over 3,000 RPM till at normal temperature.

Then rag it!

sounds true of most things in life!!! ;)

Yep, as most others really.

Get in, shut door and put seatbelt on!

Unless it's really cold, I'll just start the engine straight away as no need to wait for glow plugs!

Won't take it over 2500 rpm until it's at 90 degrees unless it's absolutely necessary.

I'm sure that starting and then idling your engine for say 5-10 minutes to "warm it up" is very bad practive really, as it won't warm up in that time (well a tdi won't anyway!) and so it's just cold oil going round the system so it's not as good at lubricating engine components. Also, it's just needless pollution too.

If you just sit there. You look strange, your wasting diesel and polluting. When you could be 10 minutes down the road.

What difference is there, whether your stationary or moving?

constant periods of idling of a diesel engine causes bore glazing and subsequent high oil consumption.

I've never let my glow plug light go off, in fact I have no idea what a glow plug is. Does this make me a bad person?

you will know if they are not working cause it wont go brumm

I guess it's fine then ... it has always brummed to this day.

I wait til the glow plug light goes off, then its got about 20 secs till the missus jumps in the car. Then were off, keepin below 2000 til its near 90 degrees.

I have noticed that sitting idling it doesnt warm up, even after ten minutes or so, but drive for 3-4 minutes and its easily up to 90. Must be how diesels work?

Mind you, the missus boots it everywhere, even from cold, tut tut tut.

the glow plug is a heating element in each cylinder, whenyou turn the key, these glow to assist with the ignition of the atomised diesel, with out the engine would spin over but would not start, they glow for longer if the engine is cold.

you should always let the glow plug light go out as if you dont you will prolong the life of them

Ign. on to prime the fuel system...

Start engine and idle for 10 secs. to get oil right round engine and turbo...

Keep under 2500-3000 revs until upto 90

Can someone explain the consequence of waiting five minutes in th mornin - This is what I have aways done and I believe was advised years ago for keppin the car in good order

no effect at all except your using expensive fuel

The engine will warm up a lot faster under load :)

I believe Skoda say not to worry unless it is below 5 degrees celcius.

I believe it's something like -15 degrees C so it's never really an issue. I suspect Skoda say it to cover themselves....

Certainly does
