Hi to all on here.

Hope I am allowed on here as I am currently driving an Impreza WRX but am strongly considering a new VRS in either 2,0 T or the 170 TDI Version .

I am really impressed with the TDI one as it seems to combine both performance and economy so therefore I would greatly appreciate current owners views on both cars,

I find its pretty hard to get a real impression of a car from a 15 to 20 min test drive considering its such a major purchase,

Welcome

Quite a few Scooby defectors around here - me included.

I've driven some reasonably modified TFSi vRS and found them to be very enjoyable. Fuel economy is much better than the Scooby.

Has to be the diesel. All that torque! Marvellous!

Ours is doing around the mid 40's mpg on average according to the computer. Had it up to 53mpg today on a long run using cruise. And thats with under 4000 miles on the clock.

Great performance and great economy. Its a no brainer!

Thanks for the welcome Stu ,Dont get me wrong I love the Scooby but with 22/23 MPG the max I am getting and that is with pretty normal driving you soon get fed up with it , also the fact that the petrol tank is so small doesnt exactly help either.

Thanks for reply Marcus

But just one thing that bothers me a little I drove one of the sales reps cars where i work , it was 1.9 TDI and was a little dissapointed by the noice admittedly car had around 50 k on the clock but I thought it was pretty noisy even as motorway speeds.

The TFSI's can be remapped to provide TDI-esque torque levels and a generous power increase.

Octavia's aren't exactly brilliant for road noise but careful selection of tyres helps a lot.

Bear in mind the 1.9TDI has a 5 speed manual box versus the 6 speeder in both types of vRS so the revs will be reduced on a motorway cruise.

The vRS TDI is impressive for a diesel and can also be remapped with good results. A forum user on here (VRS195) had a TDI develpoing circa 200 BHP.

Our standard vRS TDI is doing about 45mpg overall after 4000 miles.

If it's performance you're after - go for the TFSI. As you can see from the above graphs, the 2.0T can be mapped to give insane torque outputs. The economy they offer is pretty good too.

Oh, and welcome to Briskoda.

I am familiar with gains from VAG cars having had a TT before and getting it mapped which increased BHP to 218 ,from 180

But that was not the entire stroy as it became a much better car to drive and it made no significant difference to fuel consumption.

I suppose at the end of the day what I am looking for probably sounds unreasonable , buts its a high performance car without the high costs im currently experiencing,

Another interesting point is that Insurance for me on either the VRS TDI or TFSI is roughly half what I am currently paying so thats another plus point.

To be fair I should say I have driven diesels for 14 years now so the noise issue has never really occurred to me. The 2.0TDi is I believe a much newer engine than the 1.9 so is bound to be quieter.

Mine certainly doesn't seem noisy to me, and is much quieter than my previous Astra 1.9 CDTi.

The 1.9 was 8 valve while the 2.0TDI (in the Octavia at least) is 16 valve. IMHO the noise levels are fairly similar.

The absolute joint worst diesels for me are the 2.0TDI (99bhp) in the Astra and the 2.2Di in the P12 Primera.

They make the VAG diesels near silent in comarison.

Ever heard a 5.0 V10 TDI on tickover?? It should have a Scania badge on the front :D

Former Scooby-head here as well (Turbo 2000 SW, WRX, WRX with PPP, STi). I have test driven a modded Fabia vRS and I have to say that noise was not an issue for me - quite the opposite; I found the lack of noise in the low-revving, torquey engine a little eerie, compared to some of Japan's finest ICE's on full chat.

I had a spin in a VAG V6 2.5 TDi yesterday and from cold it was very tractor-like - agricultural, not Chelsea. The little Fabia's 1.9 TDI PD is a very refined but stealthy beast, IMHO.

The punch from the Furby's engine when I became lead-footed was reminiscent of the Impreza at its best, without the turbo lag that bedevils some Scooby's (exclude WRX PPP and STi in my experience)

Diesel do it!

Any interest in the soon-to-be-seen Legacy boxer diesel (165 bhp out of the box I believe) "the smoothest, quietest, most vibration-free, most powerful naturally aspirated diesel power-plant in the universe, which grows tress, saves children and leaps tall buildings in 1st gear", to paraphrase Subaru's publicists?

Welcome, Pat

Go careful with those performance 'graph'claims for the TFSI Stu, the car that graph was taken from has REVO Stage II with more than a whiff of other modifications!. A standard car with REVO Stage I will be around the 235bhp mark and 300ft/lbs.

No problem taking the TFSI to 400 BHP if that's what you need :)

Expensive though Len :)

There is a Mk2 vRS TFSI on this forum which recently made 300bhp 320lbft at a rolling road day, however the results seem somewhat suspicious. The K03 turbo isn't capable of such a power output.
