Peugeot 406 diesel - changing glow plugs.

Featured Replies

I've gone and volunteered myself to change the glow plugs on a colleagues Pug 406 after she was quoted £120 for labour only by a local Peugeot specialist.

I'm assuming its as easy as changing spark plugs - right ?

On the HDI engines you have to remove the inlet manifold, airbox and ducting to even gain access to the clips.

You need an M12 security spline bit to release the cover too. To remove the glow plugs you need Peugeots tool 3417a which is about £80 IIRC.

I have no idea, but can't imagine its too difficult. Them HDI engines are a dream to work on, dare say its no more than 1hr from start to finish.

I done my dads on a Citroen (probably the same engine), and as Tom says you need to remove the intake manifold, break open the clip (and replace it) by the egr valve, and various other faffing around.

The intake manifold was jammed in tight, and required some gentle persuasion to coax it out. Be careful not the drop the o-rings into the engine - these need to be replaced too.

PITA if you ask me, not nearly as easy as spark plugs but not overly difficult. I reckon a couple of hours without knowing what your doing.
